LGC Genomics R&D is a global organisation focussed on developing complete Genomic solutions. The R&D team based in Hoddesdon are responsible for creating new Genomics related PCR reagents and assay products.

The Apprentice role of Laboratory Scientist provides an opportunity to contribute to the development of new technologies supporting agricultural biotechnology and life science industry whilst receiving practical on-the-job training. Additionally the practical experience will be reinforced through part-time education carried out via interactive e-learning and on-site short residential blocks at the University of Kent, working towards a BSc (Hons) Degree in Applied Bioscience. You will be supported throughout your apprenticeship by a manager and mentors committed to developing your full potential within LGC. The combination of laboratory experience and formal education will provide you with transferable core skills and knowledge for various careers available within product development, technical support and the life science industry.

This Apprenticeship is recognised by the Science council at Registered Scientist (RSci) level.

Key accountabilities:
  • Perform supervised experiments for the development of new innovative genomics products and methods
  • Perform routine laboratory work, and taking responsibility for work undertaken
  • Thoroughly document laboratory work to an extent that will allow work to be analysed and replicated
  • Participate in maintenance of the laboratory and equipment
  • Support senior team members in the technical support of key accounts including directed laboratory work for technical troubleshooting
  • Report all activities to the senior team member in a timely and comprehensive manner

Desired qualifications

A-Level grade A in biology, and two other subjects (one being science related) at grade B or above, or Level 3 BTEC qualification in Applied Science.

Five GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade A* - C (9 - 5), including maths, English and science.

Future prospects

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, candidates will be able to apply for further positions.

Things to consider

The apprentice must be able to demonstrate the required attitudes, behaviours and interpersonal skills associated with the professional workplace.

The apprentice must be willing to commit an amount of personal time to study.

Due to the highly sensitive nature of the work, applicants should note that security clearance may be required for this role. To gain security clearance you must have three years continuous residency in the UK. Criminal convictions may prevent you from gaining security clearance.

This role may in addition require random alcohol/drug screening.
