Nottingham College are offering a great opportunity for a science technician to join their team based at their High Pavement 6th Form Campus, located in the city centre.

The Role:

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Carry out technician and related duties in preparation and development of practicals in Science
  • Be responsible for providing safe working conditions and safe working practices in accordance with COSHH regulations
  • Ensure all aspects of the Health and Safety Act (1974) are adhered to in the working environment
  • Be responsible for reporting damage; maintaining equipment; organising repairs; and purchasing assets/equipment, including PAT testing where appropriate
  • Assist in the development of new resources
  • Keep abreast of technical developments within the field of Science and Education
  • Supporting the Science team with all aspects of curriculum delivery
  • Liaising with academic staff to discuss timetables, equipment requirements and work plans
  • Running trials of experiments prior to classes and then demonstrating techniques for experiments
  • Preparing equipment and chemicals before lessons - from test tubes to state-of-the-art microscopes
  • Maintaining and repairing equipment and laboratory apparatus
  • Record keeping, e.g. for students' practical sessions, tracking methods, results, etc.
  • Ensuring that equipment is properly cleaned and that chemicals, glassware and other equipment are appropriately stored
  • Cataloguing recordings and making them available when requested (if the department houses audio visual resources)
  • Supporting the work of teachers in classes and laboratory sessions and giving technical advice to staff
  • Working with individual students and supporting them on project work
  • Managing the stock control of chemicals and equipment
  • Ensuring that all health and safety procedures are understood and followed correctly
  • Coordinating work in the laboratory to ensure efficient use is made of expensive pieces of equipment
  • Work effectively and in accordance with organisational values to achieve the College's mission and strategic priorities
  • Support, contribute to and take personal responsibility for implementing the College's commitment to Equality & Diversity
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement through participation in the Professional Development Review process
  • Support and participate in all initiatives to ensure the College has a safe and healthy environment for all students, staff and visitors
  • Carry out other duties that are required within the role as it evolves within the development of the organisation

This apprenticeship is work based learning therefore most of the time you will be working at the employer's address. Depending on your training you will only need to attend college in Nottingham for initial assessments, enrolment and weekly day release.
