What you will do in your working day
This is a highly responsible position with a key contribution to the safe and efficient operation of the harbour.
Daily tasks would include support to Deckhands, Chargehands and Supervisors in safely mooring a vessel in dock. Risk assessments carried out around the port.Support with the Vessel Traffic Services and Radio Oporators and working with Assistant Dock Masters to gain the required knowledge to complete the apprenticeship.
The training you will be getting
First year will be college based at South Shields Marine school, with accommodation costs paid for by the Employer.
Years 2 to 3 you will be working within the port you have been interviewed for, with secondments around various other ports to gain experience. In your last year, you will be asked to decide where you'd like to continue your career within ABP and sample that specific port, providing a jobrole is available within that port.
What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship
Level 4 Diploma in Marine Operations.
Further career progression within the Marine Department of any of ABP's 21 port network.
