PSS in a nutshell

At PSS, we’ve got an important job to do; and that’s to help people make the most of their lives - whatever life throws at them. Whether you’re working directly with the people who use our services, or behind the scenes in one of our offices, every day you’ll be helping to make other people feel happier, healthier and more supported.

We’re a social enterprise or, as we like to call it – a ‘business with a heart’. This means that all the money we make goes back into finding new ways to support people. We’ve got offices across Merseyside, Wales, Manchester and the Midlands, where we’re making our stamp.

What’s our learning and development team all about?

This year, PSS celebrates 100 years of being around and there’s no secret to why we’re looking this great at 100 years old. It’s a product of our genuine, determined, open-minded, professional and big-hearted staff, who truly go the extra mile to make sure that we’re awesome. Our learning and development team are the powerhouse behind this, providing people with the tools, the knowledge and the confidence they need to keep on being the best they can be in their job roles.

It’s our mission to be around for future generations which means we never want to stop being innovative and challenging the boundaries of the support we provide to so many people. Staff expertise are a big deal around here– and for good reason; the people who use our services deserve nothing less than the most top-notch support. In order to achieve this, it’s crucial that our people never stop learning and developing, making this a tremendously important team to be a part of.

Our learning and development team are based in our brand new head office, Eleanor Rathbone House (named after our formidable and very forward-thinking founder). This is just a hop, skip and a jump (if you’re the energetic sort we’re after) from Sandhills train station in Liverpool.

What you’ll do as a learning and development apprentice

From little seeds grow big oaks and as our learning and development apprentice you’ll look after these seeds. You’ll also need to have your roots firmly in place and your head facing towards the sun, as we provide you the opportunity to grow too.

You’ll be the Edward Scissorhands of the learning world, pruning all of our learning records into shape with precision and keeping an eye on how individual people are progressing. You’ll make sure all our learning data is carefully nurtured, particularly by updating and maintaining our learning management system- Learning Pool. By doing this, you’ll be supporting people to meet their individual targets, along with supporting the really big-picture stuff – us hitting our service and organisational objectives.

In return we’ll help you to blossom by providing the option to learn and develop yourself on a level three learning and development qualification. Once you’ve completed this you’ll be able to apply for CIPD membership. The things you’ll do towards this will include:

  • Supporting the learning and development team by assisting our learning technology co-ordinator to run the LMS effectively. That means keeping all the i’s dotted and all the t’s crossed to make sure we meet all the criteria that the people who monitor us look for. Making sure our external regulators are happy is very important.
  • Supporting the admin stuff behind the LMS. So that’s all about adding people to courses, creating sign-in lists, updating attendance records and running reports that the organisation needs to keep an eye on things.
  • Being the host (or hostess) with the most. Supporting the team to arrange learning and development workshops, booking this into diaries, making sure people have the resources they need, contacting people who’ll be coming to training, sending out invites and information and doing this in a timely fashion.

You’ll need:

  • To be a real people person. We’re looking for someone who can build and maintain good relationships with people right across PSS as well as other external suppliers.
  • Experience of working in an office environment and strong MS Office skills – Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • A fire in your belly. Self-belief and drive, along with a positive and ‘can do’ attitude
