Working as a software developer you will support the wider development team by designing and implementing code. This is a unique opportunity to be part of early stage development of CRM applications that will change the way the council works and how we interact with the public. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the role will include: 

  • Develop and test and software systems
  • Facilitate root cause analysis of system issues, carry out code refactoring and optimisation
  • Use source control management systems and continuous Integration/deployment environments
  • To write detailed technical design documentation, specifications and plans
  • Possess strong problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Work alongside business analysts to refine software requirements for development

Desired skills

  • Evidence of having successfully learnt a programming/scripting language
  • Appreciation of testing/quality assurance
  • Evidence of working effectively in a team
  • An understanding of databases and SQL
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Windows and Office programmes
  • An understanding of Agile development and the software development lifecycle
  • Good general knowledge of cloud computing and software

Desired qualifications

  • English Language and Maths GCSE, or equivalents, grade C/4 or above
  • Level 3 qualification in computer/science related subject
  • 3 A Levels (BBB) or BTEC National Diploma (DDM) or IB: 30 points including Standard Mathematics grade 4

Future prospects

You will be exposed to many areas of software development and a range of backend and frontend technologies. You will learn about using source control management systems and continuous integration/deployment environments whilst working in an Agile environment. Following the apprenticeship, you will have the ability to undertake various software developer roles and to enhance your career further. 

Things to consider

For the first term of Year 1 and 2, you will be based at the University of Essex and you will need to attend full time. The rest of the time will be spent at Chelmsford City Council at their offices in Chelmsford.

You will also need to attend University of Essex during the examination period. Therefore you will need to consider your transportation.
