We have an exciting development opportunity available at our Mr Kipling Site based in Stoke. The apprentice will play an active role in the Site Technical Team in providing the Bakery with technical expertise to ensure all products are manufactured to company and external standards, with regard to food hygiene, safety, quality, andlegality.

The apprentice willsupport & assist the Technical Management Team, in key business initiatives, such as Business Improvement Process, Existing Product Development, Strategic Materials Testing & Site Technical Projects.

The apprentice will learn tomaintain existing site technical systems & information in line with process & product specifications

The apprentice willidentify, champion and drive continuous improvement in quality standards and processes within the technical department and across site, developing short, medium and long term strategies.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (as part of development programme):

Safety and Quality
  • Monitor the compliance of products, processes, the manufacturing/warehouse environment and personnel to current EU and UK food safety legislation.
  • Participate in the HACCP programme, including validation and verification of studies.
  • Promote and encourage a culture of high standards in food safety and quality, leading by example.
  • Personally demonstrate the correct safety behaviours, ensuring safe operating practices are followed in areas of responsibility.
  • Participate in safety and quality audits, documenting non-conformances and actioning corrective action plans.
  • Encourage a culture that enhances behavioural awareness to reduce accidents and near misses.

Process Support
  • Provides Technical process support to operations and other site functions.
  • Carry out appropriate technical process training within the business.
  • Ensures safe and appropriate quality production processes.
  • Implements continuous improvement programmes for processes.
  • Ensure detailed process and product specifications are available to site.
  • Ensure adequate records on process issues, trials, project work.

Operations Management
  • Manage the rejection and disposal of non-conforming or downgraded materials and finished goods according to Company procedures; investigate so as to determine route cause analyses and drive preventative/corrective actions via focussed and continuous improvement activities.
  • Maintain systems and controls to ensure that food safety & quality of product is at the forefront of all activities. Monitor, by auditing, compliance to agreed quality procedures, product specification and process specifications.
  • Monitor weekly consumer complaint trends so as to identify, investigate and highlight incidents, alerting site Technical Manager and instigating investigations and corrective actions. Generate a monthly report of consumer complaints against plan / KPIs for lines/products. Promote a continuous improvement approach to both reduce customer complaint levels year on year, and improve product quality.
  • Investigate consumer complaints returned to site, ensuring a timely, accurate and detailed reply.
  • Manage, in a timely manner, complaints of non-conforming or substandard raw materials or packaging materials.
  • Develop as part of a multi-disciplined team to optimise resources, flexibility, performance and cover.
  • Ensure efficient operation and control of all resources in quality testing teams. Deliver Improvement plans covering all operational KPI's within the roles scope.
  • Define and promote, by being a clear role model, the behavioural standards expected of employees.
  • Identify own training needs and with manager agree a time plan for achieving this

Continuous Improvement
  • Drive initiatives for improving GMP, food safety and quality of product.


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Clear understanding of the importance of safety and quality standards
  • Attention to detail to ensure that detailedprocess and product specifications are available to site
  • Ensure adequate records on process issues, trials, project work.
  • Understanding of Continuous Improvement tools and techniques
  • Strong communication skills - both written and verbal
  • Computer Literate in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint

  • Practical, analytical and logical


Desired qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 A levels (or equivalent) at grade C or above - Including a Science or Food Technology qualification
  • A minimum of GCSE English, Scienceand Maths (Grade C or above) or equivalent


Future prospects

This is a development opportunity supported by degree-level comprehensive training plan.

Successful apprentices will be eligible to apply for membership with the Institute of Food Science & Technology and attain Registered Scientist status.

Each year there will be a performance review and progression discussion. On successful completion apprentices will become part of the permanent team.

Starting Salary £18k+ (incrementally rising to £26k+ on successful completion of study)
