About our apprenticeship scheme
We are looking for hard-working, motivated and enthusiastic people to join our apprenticeship scheme. Regardless of your age, previous experience or qualifications (although you must be at least 16 years of age and not in full-time education), we’re welcoming applications from those that show potential, determination and a drive to succeed. In return we can give you the opportunity to kick-start your career under the management of our skilled and experienced staff, whilst earning, learning and achieving nationally recognised qualifications at the same time.

About us
This apprenticeship is with the Environment Strategy team. We lead on environmental sustainability and the council’s environment strategy. We manage the council’s waste disposal contract, textile banks contract and the reuse and recycling centre contract. We manage performance and risk for our department, Environment, Housing & Regeneration; respond to environment-related consultations and provide data analysis; and write funding bids to secure funding to deliver projects.

About the role
The apprenticeship on offer is a Level 4 Associate Project Manager. This two year course will give you a solid grounding in the theory of project management, matched in practice by the work you’ll do with us. The first six months of the role will give you a good grounding in the team and everything we do. You’ll get involved in a range of tasks and shadow members of the team to understand what we do. Then, based on your skills and interests and the areas you’d particularly like to develop, you’ll be able to get involved in a range of projects and issues. We’ll also try to enable you to get a flavour of the work other teams in our department do as well.

At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll be confident managing projects, and you’ll have worked on projects at every stage, including taking at least one from start to finish. You’ll have gained skills in contract management, commissioning and communication. And at the end of your apprenticeship, we’ll support you with interview skills to help you take the step.

About you
We’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic about progressing their career by doing an apprenticeship whilst working. Previous experience is less important; your attitude and willingness to learn is what’s important. You will be interested in the environment, how local authorities can help people live in more sustainable ways, and how we can get the best value for money for our residents. You will have good written and verbal communication skills that we’ll help you develop further.

Please note, in order to qualify for apprenticeship funding you must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a GCSE level C/equivalent in Maths and English and be able to present original qualification certificates - if you do not hold these qualifications/certificates you must be committed to complete these via functional skills assessments as part of the apprenticeship.
  • Only apply for an apprenticeship unrelated to any qualifications they hold at the same or higher level than the apprenticeship they wish to apply for. The apprenticeship being applied for must be unrelated in subject and content from the qualification already held.
  • Not be enrolled on another funded apprenticeship or another funded further education or higher education programme at the time you start your new apprenticeship.
  • Have the right to work and study in England and be one of the following:
  1. A citizen of a country within the European Economic Area (EEA) or have the right to abode in the UK and have been resident in the EEA for at least the previous three years on the first day of your apprenticeship.
  2. A non-EEA citizen with permission from the UK government to live in the UK, (not for educational purposes) and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of learning.

More information about apprenticeships can be found on the National Apprenticeship website.

Our offer
We can offer you a supportive environment to grow and develop your career with the opportunity to put your ideas across. Innovation and ambition are strongly encouraged here in Sutton, and you'll get a great feel for that working in our friendly and collaborative environment.
We offer a modern and flexible working environment for our staff allowing you to work flexibly from our offices in Carshalton, whilst on the move, and at home following the introduction of Google Chromebooks, Apps and technology, which have acted as a key enabler for collaborative and streamlined working.

We also offer a huge variety of staff benefits including:
