An exciting position to work with a principal contractor on a multi-billion pound capital works programme of capital works relating to utility enhancements.

Over this 5.5-year apprenticeship, you will follow the 'Quantity Surveying' learning pathway with this BSc level qualification and will also be required to gain (some) exposure to other construction management disciplines such as site management, design, planning and procurement to support your college studies.

The successful candidate will have strong numeracy skills, along with critical thinking, good judgement and decision making, problem solving, reading comprehension and time management.

Construction Technical Apprentice qualification is a supervised 66-month programme of training with four days in work and one day per week spent in college. For the duration of the course, support will be allocated towards becoming a chartered member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

As an apprentice trainee Quantity Surveyor,you will learn how to be responsible for:
  • Prepare tender and contract documents, including activity schedule agreement with subcontractors;
  • Undertake cost analysis for capital project work;
  • Perform risk, value management and cost control;
  • Advise on a procurement strategy;
  • Identify, analyse and develop responses to commercial risks;
  • Prepare and analyse costings for tenders;
  • Allocate work to subcontractors;
  • Provide advice on contractual claims;
  • Analyse outcomes and write detailed progress reports;
  • Value completed work and arrange payments;
  • Maintain awareness of the different NEC contracts in current use;
  • Understand the implications of health and safety regulations;
  • Gain exposure to other parts of the business.

During the apprenticeship scheme you will have a dedicated mentor assigned to you throughout the programme who will be there to guide and support you where necessary. There will be annual performance reviews to track your progress and reward you for dedication and hard work. As an apprentice you must be able to balance both your workload and study to ensure standards are maintained in both areas.

Desired skills

  • Minimum entry requirements: 5 x GCSE A*- C/9-4 in maths and English or equivalent are required.
  • A Levels are desirable
  • Full UK driving licence

  • A - Level BBBor;
  • BTEC National Diploma DDMor:
  • Access to HE qualifications with 24 Distinctions 21 Meritsor;
  • Equivalent level 3 qualifications worth 128 UCAS points
  • Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs A-C/9-4 including maths and English or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above).

Advanced entry

For those holding a Level 4 qualification with specific grades, it may be possible to enter onto Level 5 of the course and 'top up' your existing qualification to a full degree:
  • BTEC HNC/HND in a Quantity Surveying/Building related subject
  • Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Quantity Surveying/Building related subject
  • Construction Surveying Technician Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship or;
  • Cognate Level 4 qualification in Construction and Built Environment


Future prospects

  • Developing into a quantity surveyor for dedicated projects
  • Mentoring/ line management of junior staff
