To design Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) systems for Energy Efficient Buildings and Passivhaus building.

Duties to include:
  • The core task is to learn to design ventilation systems for new build and retrofit dwellings (existing houses) using a special CAD based 3D design package. We currently use CADVent, but are moving to MagiCAD over the next year.The candidate will already have competence in AutoCAD, but training in CADvent/MagiCAD will be provided on the job if required
  • As the training progresses, the role will involve talking to architects and self-builders about their design requirements and constraints and generally providing customer support, via telephone and email
  • You will work collaboratively with the Design Manager and the other Design Engineers in the team on a day to day basis, as well as other members of the MVHR team. The team is always learning and developing its expertise in this pioneering field of low energy building design
  • The MVHR Department has a national reputation for designing and supplying MVHR systems


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Methodical nature with ability to have attention to detail
  • Computer literate with knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Reasonable ability communicate verbally and to write
  • Technical aptitude and ability to think in three dimensions
  • Interest in 'green' technology/energy efficient building


Personal qualities

  • The ability to listen and learn and to work in a team
  • Strong practical 'sense'
  • Adaptable


Desired qualifications

  • BTEC in Construction or related qualifications, or A'levels including maths or Physics, level C or above, with some evidence of a practical interest in construction
  • Good GCSE in Maths (B grade or above desired) and ideally also in Physics and one written subject, English/History/Geography

Things to consider

This role will involve long of periods of working on a computer interspersed with telephone calls and conversations across the office.

Staff are encouraged to take it in turns get up and make a round of drinks (tea/coffee etc) for the office and take breaks getting up from the computer to walk around.

Green Building Store expects team members to operate with a high level of autonomy and responsibility, once they are familiar with their role and have developed the competence to do so.

Some clients are quite demanding and it helps to be calm under pressure.
