The apprenticeship/training programme in Electrical / Electronic Engineering will take 2 to 5 years to complete. This will be facilitated in the Medical Electronics Department and by an educational provider. The Trust will provide support to ensure the apprentice/trainee completes the training programme satisfactorily. Day release facilities will be provided which the apprentice must attend throughout the training period to undertake appropriate studies, leading to the award of a nationally recognised technical certification. On completion of L4 Higher Apprentice Program, an application to continue on the development pathway to access the distance learning program at L6 Medical Engineering Degree (or equal).
  • To perform scheduled preventative and corrective maintenance, calibration, safety and acceptance testing on a wide range of medical devices
  • These activities will need to be carried out throughout the South Devon Area and with supervision from a more experienced technician
  • Record all activities

With agreement of the Head of Service, Team Leader, Specialist Technicians, Senior Technician or Technicians carry out simple repairs (non-routine) to medical devices under supervisor.

Monitor stocks of appropriate components and spares, re-ordering where necessary to keep an adequate stock. Update the stock management system with replacement stock items.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Ideally the candidate will have achieved a reasonable understanding of basic engineering techniques, including a basic level of hand tool use, ideally will have some interest or hobby that could further demonstrate some degree of practical knowledge within and engineering environment
  • Ideally the candidate will have a reasonable understanding of basic human physiology and anatomy (human science/biology)


Personal qualities

  • Must be a presentable individual with the ability to communicate effectively with all members of the team responsible for their career development and through various levels of the business
  • Must have the desire to learn all aspect of engineering within our core business sector and should ideally have a desire to push themselves to learn additional skills outside of their core strengths
  • Should be courteous at all time and have the strength of character to be able to take on board both positive and negative feedback and to be able to move forward with a positive attitude


Desired qualifications

The candidate must have achieved an academic qualification in

A Levels in maths or Technical subject (Physics/Chemistry)

The candidate will have achieved a reasonable academic qualification in any of the following subjects:
  • Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations
  • English (GCSE grade C or 4) or equivalent
  • Mathematics (GCSE grade C or 4) or equivalent
  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma Engineering or other Level 3 Technical qualification


Future prospects

On successful completion of the Higher Level 4 Apprenticeship, there may be an opportunity to progress to other qualifications (Degree) within the job role.

Things to consider

Must be able to get to and from our place of business for the appropriate start and finish times on a daily basis. Must also be able to attend South Devon College on a day release basis.
