With KAM (KeolisAmey Metrolink)putting people at the heart of everything we do, the communications team is pivotal in helping deliver our mission - and is accountable for internal and external communications. The team deals with everything from media enquiries that result in news stories about Metrolink appearing in local, regional and national media, to arranging events and photoshoots, to supporting managers in communicating changes to employees that impact on colleagues' work and lives.

Largely an office-based role, you will become an integral part of the Communications team. The PR Apprentice will be required to undertake (but not be restricted to) the following activities as part of their role:
  • Assist the communications team with communications and marketing planning, delivery of the business plan and delivery of the communications calendar as agreed by KAM to support all areas of the business in delivering their objectives.
  • Assist the Communications Business Partner with processing and coordinating film and marketing requests, media queries and internal communications products and activities (such as generating, curating and proofing stories for the newsletter).
  • Assist the Communications Team with arranging, coordinating and delivering events such as staff commendations, photo shoots and the regular cycle of employee recognition activities and events.
  • Assist with disseminating communications materials and messages. For example, distributing newsletters and publications, uploading material to depot screens & intranet, and placing content on social media channels.
  • Assist with the recording, reporting, monitoring and evaluation of communications activities. For example, monitoring and responding to comments on LinkedIn, keeping administrative systems up to date such as spreadsheets monitoring communications compliance, and supporting the team in gaining formal and informal feedback on the impact of communications and presenting it back to relevant colleagues and teams to inform their decision making.
  • Create content such as staff briefings, press releases, taking pictures at events and, under the supervision of the Communications BP/Head of Communications, ensuring that content is captured, approved and released in ways that are compliant with KAM procedures as well as media laws (such as Contempt of Court, Libel and GDPR).
  • Media liaison - understanding how the media operates, deal with day-to-day queries from the media, pitch stories and/or products to the media, build relationships with the media (i.e. journalists), create media lists and monitor media coverage.
  • Deliver and evaluate campaigns - support the team in creating new campaigns, work to deliver a strategy, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of PR campaigns and measure their impact.
  • Presentations - plan, structure and deliver presentations to colleagues and at external events and meetings.
  • Research and data analysis - conduct research for the team and report key details.
  • Budgets - taking charge of small finance processes related to communications.

Desired qualifications

  • Minimum of three A Levels or equivalent is desirable.
  • GCSE: 9 to 4 (formerly A* to C) or equivalent in English language, maths, science, and IT.

  • This role could be the start of your career in communications or public relations. You could go on to take on a role within the communications team or elsewhere in the business.

Things to consider

  • You may be required to work flexible hours on occasion.
  • The 18-month programme does not begin until the official induction date onto the apprenticeship.
