With the role of apprentice Data Analyst and Simulation Engineer you have an opportunity to drive the future of Buildings and Cities. You will join a team with a rare mix of diverse and exceptional talents - from engineering, computer science, architecture, maths, physics and biology. The dynamic and evolving nature of our work requires us to continue to explore, develop and apply new technologies, which is what this apprenticeship offers.

The work is highly varied and challenging. It will involve analysis, modelling, as well as supporting our consulting work. Defining the problems as well as solving them. Developing solutions as well as reporting. Desk work as well as field work and opportunities to shadow design team and client meetings. Applying emerging technologies as well as steering the development of in-house software tools. You would be working on international projects with first principles-based problem solving, advanced data analytics, predictive modelling, and simulations.
  • 70-80% analysis and simulations
  • 10-20% steering, testing or potentially developing software
  • 10-20% report writing / reviewing / site visit / client meeting
  • 10-20% group / marketing / collaboration and research activities


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Strong data analytics, visualisation and statistical analysis skills
  • Experience within graphics, 3D modelling or GIS environment will be desirable
  • Good communication skills
  • A team orientated focus (including the ability to work in a team environment)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Highly numerate
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Access and familiarity with the Windows, OSX and Linux Operating Systems, major web browsers and browser development tools, and mobile devices and applications would be desirable
  • Awareness of software development tools and web technologies including HTML
  • The ability to work well in a team, as well as focus on your own self development
  • A passion for Technology

  • An ability to think "outside the box" and solve problems of a multidisciplinary nature


Desired qualifications

  • Minimum of GCSE C or equivalent in English and maths
  • You should have a Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in Computing
  • You will ideally already have three A Levels at grade B or above, preferably in related subjects such as mathematics, science and IT, or a BTEC Extended Diploma at MMM, or other qualifications equivalent to 96 UCAS tariff points, in addition to Level 2 English and mathematics (GCSE Grade C/4 or above)
  • Applications from those who do not meet these requirements but who have demonstrable and relevant work experience will be considered on an individual basis, subject to completing a programming assessment set by UCW
  • Due to the funded nature of this programme, applicants with undergraduate degrees in computing/IT/Electronics Engineering will not be eligible


Future prospects

Beyond completion of the apprenticeship there is the opportunity to join our Analytics and Insight team as a full-time analyst.

Things to consider

This is a 4-year degree apprenticeship through University Centre Weston (UCW). On completion of the apprenticeship you will be awarded with a Bachelor of Science degree validated by UWE Bristol.
