The role of the Graduate Apprentice Town Planner will be to support the Town Planning team in Manchester across a range of projects, from statutory planning work such as planning applications and plan preparation, through to urban regeneration and masterplanning studies, for public and private sector clients. The nature of the work will of course depend on the commissions secured and being undertaken at the time. All work will be managed and supervised by more senior members of the team.

Duties will include:
  • Research and survey work
  • Developing strong, evidence-based proposals
  • Writing detailed reports
  • Making persuasive presentations to partners and clients

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire practical experience across a broad range of town planning projects in a supportive and multi-disciplinary environment.

You will be able to demonstrate a broad range of relevant professional and team working skills, including:
  • An interest in and knowledge of the role of the town planner
  • A wider interest in design and the built environment
  • An ability to work well within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Well written and structured report writing
  • Being able to undertake research and survey work, with reasonable supervision, to develop strong, evidence-based proposals
  • Confidence in making persuasive presentations
  • Demonstrating initiative and a forward thinking approach

Personal qualities

  • You will be an enthusiastic and professionally-minded graduate
  • Able to show a strong academic performance, and committed to undertaking the RTPI-accredited post-graduate Apprenticeship
  • You will have a strong interest in town planning and the built environment and be aware of the key challenges facing the profession, and the opportunities to shape better places

Desired qualifications

Degree (2:2 or above) in any subject.
