We will place successful applicants in operational roles in small teams in London, such as parliamentary and ministerial briefing services' and programme fund units. FCO Departments will configure the roles to meet specific business needs but they might typically include:

  • Organising meetings or events that bring together colleagues from across the FCO and Whitehall. Preparing information and arranging logistics for programme boards.
  • Providing effective business administration services while seeking to improve or standardise processes so that teams operate as effectively and efficiently as possible.

  • Effective and persuasive customer engagement.
  • Communicating clearly with stakeholders, departments and the FCO's overseas posts.
  • Provide briefing and written communications to tight deadlines (e.g. in response to urgent parliamentary questions).

Management of resources:
  • Effective budget monitoring/management, ensuring value for money and impact. Possible line management of junior colleague(s).
  • Policy support: Gather and assess key information to produce accurate and timely responses (e.g. for responses to parliamentary questions or Freedom of Information Act requests). Use initiative to identify and implement procedures or modify existing approaches to tackle new issues.
  • Project management approach and problem solving: Analyse information, identify risks, troubleshoot problems and recommend a viable solution or course of action.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Excellent literacy, numeracy and IT skills.
  • Competent using IT packages including Microsoft Office - Outlook, Excel and ideally, knowledge of Microsoft Windows 10.
  • Good interpersonal, team-working skills.
  • Accurate and effective communication skills (oral and written).

Personal qualities

  • Initiative, highly organised and able to prioritise workload to meet changing and conflicting priorities to tight deadlines.
  • Good analytical skills to process complex information, identify and problem-solve risks/issues, and present workable solutions.

Desired qualifications

Five GCSEs (including English and maths) at Grade 5/C or above or equivalent.

Two A levels - grades A - D or equivalent.

Future prospects

This is a limited term leading to permanent appointment subject to successful completion of the apprenticeship and being granted Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance during the apprenticeship.

Things to consider

The positions are Home Civil Service roles providing junior administrative support to FCO departments while undertaking the Level 4 Business Administrator Higher Apprenticeship. We are not recruiting for a specific departmental vacancy. Instead, we will place you into your first role depending on business need and in light of your skills and experience.
