We are currently recruiting an Apprentice Laboratory Scientist at our manufacturing plant in Chorley, Lancashire,to work across our two laboratory functions focusing on research and development and quality control activities.

The successful candidate will undertake a 4 year Laboratory Scientist Degree Apprenticeship through Manchester Metropolitan University, distance learning whilst on the job training with residentials at MMU throughout the course.

The role involves assisting in the day to day activities of the QC and R&D laboratories. Sample collection, preparation and testing to the highest standards. Production and analysis of research samples. Record keeping ensuring continued compliance with quality and external accreditation systems.

Key Tasks and accountabilities:
  • Work to the agreed site safety standards anduse the correct PPE at all times
  • Maintain the laboratory in a clean and safe manner
  • Study diligently each week to ensure fulfilment of the Apprentice Degree course requirements
  • Attend residential school as required by the course curriculum
  • Collect raw material samples and test for compliance to appropriate Works instructions/Agreed Quality Plans
  • Prepare finished products for testing and test to the appropriate Works instructions/Agreed Quality Plans
  • Carry out calibration of test equipment where appropriate and maintain calibration records
  • Maintain full and accurate records of test results for raw materials and finished products
  • Assisting in internal/external audits and with auditors
  • Ordering of laboratory consumables and maintaining stock
  • Develop new products and improve existing formulations for performance and cost
  • Benchmarking of competitor products
  • Provide customer support including troubleshooting and site evaluation

Measures of success:
  • Laboratories maintained in a safe, clean, and tidy condition
  • Complete and pass course study modules and assessments on time
  • Material tested on time for release
  • No failed material being released to customers
  • Continued calibration of equipment/reduced downtime of equipment
  • Development of new products meeting and exceeding customer requirements
  • Minimise and reduce quality issues


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Computer literate - including ability to use standard Microsoft Office packages.
  • Excellent time management skills - must have a methodical approach to planning and delivering tasks.
  • Able to work to deadlines.


Personal qualities

  • Ability to communicate effectively (written andverbal) with, colleagues and line management
  • Ability to work in a methodical and organised manner


Desired qualifications

3 A levels (or equivalent), one to include chemistry.

Future prospects

Full time role in the technical department.

Things to consider

During our peak season the role can be quite pressurised due to high levels of material production.
