Cogent Skills is working with PolyOne Corporation to recruit an Apprentice Laboratory Scientist. You will assist in the development of new innovative products, in a practical laboratory environment, which include sampling, testing, measuring, recording and analysing results of various chemicals and polymers. You will also provide all the required technical support to enable the laboratory to function effectively whilst adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines.

  • Wage: £14,000 - £15,000 per annum
  • Holidays: 25 days plus bank holidays
  • Qualifications: 3 A-levels (with one being Chemistry at grade C or above) or equivalent, equating to a minimum of 104 UCAS tariff points.
  • Location: Knowsley, Merseyside
  • Working Hours: Monday to Friday 9am – 5.30pm with 30 minute lunch break
  • Duration: 4 years 
  • Start Date: 2nd September 2019

Our products are used to improve the appearance (e.g. colour) or performance; a few examples being improved barrier to stop food spoilage, approaches to aid with reduced CO, emissions and sustainability goals. 

We have an opportunity available for a Laboratory Scientist Apprenticeship to join our Global Development Team based in Knowsley. The primary responsibility of this team is to develop and deliver new technology programs and products in support of our business units. In addition, the Department is responsible for providing technical support to the existing technology base to ensure full exploitation in all business units across the globe.

DESCRIPTION OF POST / KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

You will be an integral part of a development team working on a variety of technical projects.  This will allow you to gain good practical laboratory experience, processing experience and formulation experience as a part of product development.  You will have the opportunity to work on specific projects and you will be expected to achieve results.  The exact nature of the project will depend on customer needs at the time. The laboratories are fully equipped with a range of specialised instrumentation and equipment for producing, testing and measuring the properties of the products.

Typical work activities

Tasks typically involve:

  • performing laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data to support R&D and Production activities.
  • carrying out routine tasks accurately and following strict methodologies to carry out analyses.
  • preparing samples
  • operating a wide variety of processing and colour assessment equipment.
  • Performing mathematical calculations for the determination of test methods and presentation of results.
  • operating a wide variety of analytical equipment.
  • supporting on plant, in process testing.
  • maintain good accurate written records of work carried out
  • recording and interpreting results to support projects and ensure compliance.
  • using computers and performing mathematical calculations for the determination and presentation of results
  • keeping up to date with technical developments, especially those which can save time and improve reliability;
  • conducting searches on relevant topics.
  • maintaining compliance with Management Systems
  • following and ensuring strict safety procedures and safety checks.
  • to perform these duties in an accurate and timely manner.

Required Qualifications

The entry requirements are three A-levels (with one being Chemistry at grade C or above) or equivalent, equating to a minimum of 104 UCAS tariff points. Prospective candidates should also have Maths and English GCSE grade 4-9 (A-C) or equivalent. We will individually evaluate candidates who do not meet these requirements, but have workplace experience.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Training to be provided

Work based and knowledge competencies to be delivered in line with the Standard / Framework guidelines. This will include;

  • Functional skills
  • Full recognised apprenticeship qualification
  • On the job competency training
  • Knowledge qualification may be applicable

Training to be provided will be a mixture of on-site training, e-learning and block release with MMU or University of Kent. Assessment will take place on site.

Degree Apprenticeship in Chemical Science

Training to be part of contracted hours making up the working week.

End Assessment will take place on site.
