Salary - £15,207 starting salary, rising in annual increments to £22,463 per annum
Contract status - Fixed-term apprenticeship contract for five years. Subject to performance and successful completion of the programme, apprentices may be offered permanent employment with the Council
Hours - Full-time, 36 hours per week (20% study time)
Apprenticeship framework/standard - Chartered Town Planner (Degree)


This apprenticeship entails a part-time fully-funded undergraduate degree apprenticeship and APC leading to a Masters Royal Town Planning Institute (MRTPI) qualification. On the job training will be provided for all skills required.

About the role
We have a new and exciting apprenticeship opportunity within our Regeneration and Economy Team which is part of our Growth Directorate. We are looking to recruit talented and enthusiastic apprentices with a passion for improving places and quality of people's lives, who can apply initiative and enthusiasm to join our growing team to work across our Regeneration, Planning, Economic Development, Housing and Investment services so we can deliver inclusive and diverse opportunities for our residents, businesses, students and visitors. 

The long term potential is for you to become a Chartered Town Planner through and a Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and Institute of Apprenticeship accredited course programme through our experienced education partner at the London South Bank University based in Elephant and Castle, and will develop technical skills working within across a number of services within the Growth Directorate. 

About you
In this role you will work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders over time and therefore communication and interpersonal skills are very important. You’ll also need to be proactive, confident and willing to learn. 

You will need to demonstrate the ability to develop and deepen the Council’s partnerships and deliver innovative paths for service delivery across planning, regeneration and economic development. Key also will be the ability to deliver place based projects and regeneration programmes set out in the service plan and borough’s Economic Growth and Development Strategy 2018-25, with a strategic focus on the delivery of affordable employment space, capitalising on business successes and the application of SMART CITY principles to promote employment growth.

Please note, in order to qualify for apprenticeship funding and be considered for this post you must meet the following essential criteria - applicants who do not meet this criteria will not be considered:

  • Have the equivalent of 3 A-Levels (minimum of 112 UCAS points).
  • Have GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above.
  • Have a keen interest in the built and natural environment.
  • Only apply for an apprenticeship unrelated to any qualifications they hold at the same or higher level than the apprenticeship they wish to apply for. The apprenticeship being applied for must be unrelated in subject and content from the qualification already held.
  • Not be enrolled on another funded apprenticeship or another funded further education or higher education programme at the time you start your new apprenticeship.
  • Have the right to work and study in England and be one of the following:
  1. A citizen of a country within the European Economic Area (EEA) or have the right to abode in the UK and have been resident in the EEA for at least the previous three years on the first day of your apprenticeship.
  2. A non-EEA citizen with permission from the UK government to live in the UK, (not for educational purposes) and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of learning.

Our offer
Our apprenticeships offer 23 days paid annual leave, access to our staff benefits (including discounts at local shops, restaurants and attractions), and a starting salary of £15,207 per annum rising in annual increments as follows:

  • Year 1 (Level 4) - £15,207 per annum
  • Year 2 (Level 5) - £17,835 per annum
  • Year 3 (Level 6) - £20,463 per annum
  • Year 4 (Level 7) - £21,463 per annum
  • Year 5 (Level 7) - £22,463 per annum
