The apprenticeship role reports directly to the Service Areas Leads and is responsible for:

Performance:
  • Works with manager and colleagues to define outcomes, set targets and monitor performance, within a culture of continual improvement
  • Supports operational plans to ensure that the resources within the teams are used to best effect and impact

Customers and partners:
  • Builds strong internal and external working partnerships to enable the service to be delivered in an outcome-focused and efficient way
  • Supports Kingston's commitment to community cohesion and valuing diversity and social inclusion

Digital/new ways of working:
  • Uses new technologies, particularly Google, to adopt modern, agile working practices, improve customer service and eliminating paper-based processes wherever possible

Delivery:
  • Take responsibility for relevant project administration including organising meetings and workshops, prepare collate and distribute meeting papers
  • Support officers on project and programme management tasks
  • Represent the team at project meetings as needed, taking responsibility for providing updates and ensuring actions are recorded and followed up
  • Research areas of best practice including collating and analysing data to inform options appraisals and business cases
  • Work with colleagues across the organisation to continually improve the approach to project and programme management
  • Support the co-design andengagement programmes of the Regeneration and Economy team

Desired skills

You will need to demonstrate the ability to develop and deepen the Council's partnerships and deliver innovative paths for service delivery across planning, regeneration and economic development. Key also will be the ability to deliver place based projects and regeneration programmes set out in the service plan and borough's Economic Growth and Development Strategy 2018-25, with a strategic focus on the delivery of affordable employment space, capitalising on business successes and the application of SMART CITY principles to promote employment growth.
  • In this role you will work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders over time and therefore communication and interpersonal skills are very important. You'll also need to be proactive, confident and willing to learn
  • Keen interest in the built and natural environment
  • Be experienced in successfully supporting advising on major project work and research
  • Have good leadership skills, modelling a performance culture and constructively building achievement, confidence and skills in others

In order to successfully deliver the responsibilities of the role, you will need to:

Desired qualifications

  • 2:2 degree in cognate area (or substantial work experience)
  • Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C/9-4 (or equivalent)including maths and English


Future prospects

The long-term potential is for you to become a Chartered Town Planner through and a Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and Institute of Apprenticeship accredited course programme through our experienced education partner at the London South Bank University based in Elephant and Castle, and will develop technical skills working within across a number of services within the Growth Directorate.

Subject to performance and successful completion of the programme, apprentices may be offered permanent employment with the Council.
