We will tailor your work experience and academic studies based on what qualifications you have when you join us.

There are three entry levels:

Level 3/4 is a 3-year Apprenticeship studying a subsidiary diploma in Construction and an HNC in Civil Engineering on day release at College combined with practical experience during on job training. You will have the option to continue your studies to L5/6.

The Level 4/5 Higher Apprenticeship is a four-year programme during which you will study for an HNC & HND in Civil Engineering on day release at college and gain practical experience during on-job training in our Head Office and on site. You will then have the option to progress to level 6 should you wish to continue your studies.

The Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship is a five-year programme leading to a BSc in Civil Engineering through a combination of university studies, work-based projects and hands on delivery experience in our Head Office and on site.

These are the kinds of duties that our Apprentice Civil Engineers, following training, will be undertaking:
  • Technical support services to Network Rail and rail related infrastructure contracts
  • Planning, organisation, survey and dimensional control and quality control of allocated site activities
  • Project delivery - contributing to planning, managing work schedules, budgets and deadlines, ensuring outputs comply with client and industry specifications, standards and guidance
  • Analysis - using appropriate software systems and other data gathering tools and tests to solve technical problems
  • Site engineering - operating quality systems, site management plans and Health, Safety and Risk Management procedures, providing and checking specified technical aspects of site activities
  • Design - assisting in the development of technical solutions by producing calculations, reports, interpreting drawings, surveying sites
  • Planning - assist the planning and construction teams to optimise the work programme, planning of Safe Systems of Work
  • HSEQ - Implement site specific management plans to ensure site activities comply with CML Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental Policies


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Confident communicators - both spoken and written
  • Strong on numeracy skills
  • Experienced using MS office packages; particularly Microsoft Excel


Personal qualities

  • Positive with a 'can do' attitude and ability to learn
  • Proactive in nature and who take pride in 'getting things done' to a high standard
  • Able to demonstrate a keen interest in a career in Civil Engineering


Desired qualifications

  • You must be at least 18 years of age with a full UK Driver's Licence (due to insurance purposes and the nature of the role), with the following qualifications:
  • Minimum 3 A levels grade A-C/8-4in maths, English & Science related subject (i.e. Physics/Chemistry/ICT)
  • Civil Engineering work experience will also be taken into consideration

Things to consider

If you are already part way through a civil engineering qualification and you are able to complete your course part time, we can sponsor you through the remainder of your course on a day release basis while gaining experience and earning money while you study.

Interviews will take place in August with college enrollment this September.
