About the role.

As a Software Development Apprentice in Jisc, you will gain valuable work experience, qualifying with a degree at the end of your course.

The software industry is fast-moving and ever evolving. At Jisc, you'll have the opportunity to use and develop your skills working with the latest new and emerging technologies.

Some of the topics you will cover throughout the four-year course will include:
  • Business information systems
  • Data modelling and databases
  • Digital technologies
  • Information security
  • IT law and ethics

Tasks will be varied, but will include the following key tasks;
  • To provide user supportforin-house applications
  • To contribute to application testing
  • To understand and clarify bug reports and feature requests, improving theirdescription in our software issue tracking tools
  • As skills develop, undertake bug fixes and implement minor features
  • Learn toundertake feature implementation
  • Follow Jisc's process for application secure and secure software development
  • Support developers work with users to understand requirements, and help translate these into development tasks
  • Work to participate indesign, development and testing ofsoftwarein line with Jisc's standards and procedures
  • Assist in supportingthe demonstration ofapplication features and use to users, either face to face, or remotely
  • Learn and follow internal processes for managing software development across itslifecycle, from initial design, to regular feature releases and bug fixes
  • To participate, as learning allows, in the supportfor theoperation of the incident handling service when events have been detected
  • Develop good communication skills
  • Learn to write, review and take responsibility for clear, concise and appropriate technical documentation

This role will be based in Bristol.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • A basic understanding of coding
  • Familiar with major web browsers and browser development tools
  • Familiar with mobile apps and devices
  • Aware of operating systems including Windows, OSX and Linux
  • Aware of software tools to assist with software development
  • Aware of web technologies such as HTML, PHP, SQL and web pages
  • Aware of software such as word processing, spreadsheets and graphics

You will need the following to do this apprenticeship:
  • 96 UCAS points

A minimum of:
  • 8 x GCSE's grade A*-C / 9-4 including maths and English (or equivalent)
  • 3 x A-levels grade A-C (or equivalent) to include a technical related subject

There may be an opportunity for a permanent job at Jisc at the end of your apprenticeship.
