You will help implement and support a range of Information Technology products and services at Sedgemoor District Council. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is looking to expand their current IT technical skills and gain a thorough understanding of IT in the Public Sector. During the apprenticeship you will follow a defined work plan, with the added benefit of studying IT to achieve a degree level qualification. You will be expected to undertake a wide range of IT projects (predominantly infrastructure-based) across the Service, supporting existing network, desktop and server based infrastructure.

Working alongside a team of experienced IT Infrastructure personnel based at Bridgwater, you will learn about the latest techniques and ensure the continued success of the IT department. The service continues to support both internal and external public sector organisations while increasing our private cloud provisioning to other public sector organisations.

This post is a four year fixed term contract to support you in completing your degree.

Duties and Responsibilities include:-
  • Maintain professional study of degree apprenticeship course and modular assignments, including attendance at college and submission of controlled assessments.
  • Operate in accordance with designated work processes for achieving measurable improvements in the delivery of customer requirements, aligned to approved ITIIL and DevOps processes.
  • Support the IS Network infrastructure, assisting in the design and management of networks (routers, switches, management software) and end point device (servers, desktops/Laptops and mobile devices) to help support efficient operations and minimise security risks.
  • Undertake tasks and work packages (ITIL based) identified in the Support Desk environment as required. Where possible to resolve customer requests cover a range of systems and products immediately, avoiding assignment to others.
  • Maintain a sound knowledge of technology in general and assist with operational delivery e.g. Windows 10 enterprise, Office 2016 based toolset, various back office systems, Software/Script Development, PC and server architecture/virtualisation techniques and edge based services.
  • Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of the service and asset catalogues (product and data) to ensure effective management of data quality and security requirements.
  • Assist in documenting and maintaining procedures in relation to all systems in use.
  • Liaise with customers and help assist any training required in the use of new IS products.
  • Assist in various Infrastructure projects using the Sedgemoor Agile Project Management methodology e.g. Replacement Service Desk Solution.

The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate the following skills:
  • The ability to work well in a team, as well as focus on your own self-development
  • Experience or knowledge of IT product design and development
  • Ability to manage problems, produce documentation, and complete testing
  • Knowledge of Information and knowledge management, and component integration
  • Experience computer languages such as C++, JavaScript, HTML would be beneficial

Personal qualities

This is an ideal role for someone with a keen interest in ICT, digital technology, internet of things, mobile apps, data analytics and technology watching/trend monitoring.

Desired qualifications

This is a Degree level role. To apply, you must have minimum of:

Three A Levels at grade C and above or alternatively a BTEC Level three Extended Diploma at grade triple Distinction

Applicants for this role should also have GCSES (or equivalent) in the A*-C or Grade 9-4 range

Future prospects

There are good prospects for a post graduate Trainee role within the Service, once qualified.
