Duties to include but not limited to:
  • Researching and recording relevant planning policy, constraints and legislation with an explanation of how each applies to a development proposal on a specific site
  • Contact with clients (on the phone, via email and face to face meetings) in the course of carrying out professional work
  • Site visits and inspections (access to own vehicle and driving licence ideal)
  • Writing professional reports and completion of forms required in the preparation and submission of planning applications
  • Providing administrative support to Directors and senior planning staff


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • IT literate, experience and competence using Microsoft Office (365)
  • Researching planning policy and legislation online
  • Writing reports
  • Professional communication (on phone, face to face and email)
  • Ideally experience of working in planning
  • Familiarity with Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 2015
  • Experience of planning forms (application forms, validation requirements and CIL etc)
  • Good time management skills


Personal qualities

  • Comfortable working in a smaller office
  • Able to work independently when required
  • Show initiative and find resolutions to problems without prompting
  • Comfortable being around dogs- the office has a resident dog, therefore, applicants with allergies to dog hair should make this clear in their application
  • Ambitious/keen to take on new responsibilities and progress


Desired qualifications

  • 2:2 degree in cognate area
  • Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs gradesA-C/9-4 (or equivalent qualifications) including maths and English


Future prospects

Progression to Chartered Planner following qualification, with encouragement and prospects to progress to senior roles following completion of the apprenticeship.

Things to consider

As a smaller planning consultancy, the variety of professional work any individual is required to do is very diverse covering a wide spectrum of the planning profession. Any candidate must be comfortable regularly doing new thingsor tackling a new problem for the first time.

The role will require attending site meetings which means occasional work outside in adverse weather. Our office is located on the first floor of a building, with the only access available being up a flight of stairs.

Many of our clients are from a very diverse range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds and/or are not formally educated, or do not speak English as their first language. Particular empathy and understanding will therefore be necessary to help assist and support our clients achieve their development objectives.

ET Planning runs a paperless office, candidates must be comfortable solely using IT for all of their working duties and requirements. Our IT infrastructure is also based on Apple OSX and iOS operating software or is cloud based. As such, applicants must be comfortable/willing to learn using Mac computer systems.
