University bursary:

Earn £4k per year of study in any degree subject, with paid summer training with tech employers

Technology is everywhere in our modern world. We use it like second nature in all sorts of ways, whether it’s social media, music streaming or gaming. But it’s so much more than just the phone in your hand: there’s technology in everything from phone networks to medical databases; transport timetables to power grids.

So if we want to protect our modern world, we need to make sure we protect the technology that keeps everything running. And that’s why CyberFirst are training a new generation of cyber security specialists – with the CyberFirst bursary.

Who runs CyberFirst?

CyberFirst was founded by GCHQ and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), as an initiative to help young people all over the UK to learn how to protect our digital world. With involvement from some of the biggest tech employers and household name businesses, we offer brilliant opportunities to train in one of today’s most-sought-after specialisms.

What’s on offer?

CyberFirst are on the look-out for hundreds of UK students. You can be studying for any degree subject, at any UK university, as long as you’re either starting your degree or have at least two years of full-time undergraduate study remaining in September 2020. Here’s what you’ll get:

  • £4k bursary per year of your degree, supporting your studies
  • Paid summer training with brilliant cyber security and tech employers
  • Help on graduation to place you in a graduate-level cyber security role within UK national security, government or industry

Who can be a CyberFirst bursary student?

First things first – you don’t need to be a programmer. We do look for coders too, but there are so many more skills involved in cyber security. So, if you don’t know how to code, it’s open to you too. So what do you need, exactly?

  • UK nationals or dual nationals (subject to security clearance)
  • At least BBB (or predicted) in your A Levels (or equivalent to 120 UCAS points) in any subject – visit the UCAS Tariff calculator to see how many points your qualifications are worth
  • A GCSE in Maths at 6 or above (or equivalent)
  • An aptitude for computers, how they work and how to secure them – and the willingness to learn more
  • Dedication, team spirit, and the drive to protect our technology

Plus EITHER of the following:

You have a place on an undergraduate degree or integrated Masters starting from September 2020, in any subject, at a UK university

You’re already studying for an undergraduate degree or integrated Masters, with a minimum of two years left of your course from September 2020, and you’re on course for at least a 2:1 in your grades this academic year

That’s it. As long as you meet the criteria above, we want to hear from you. Whatever your background, whatever subjects you’ve studied – as long as you’ve got potential and a curiosity about tech, you could find your calling with us.

This is a CyberFirst world.

Train for it.
