Degree apprenticeship

Earn £19k a year, study for your degree, and work in a real government tech role

Technology is everywhere in our modern world. We use it like second nature in all sorts of ways, whether it’s social media, music streaming or gaming. But it’s so much more than just the phone in your hand: there’s technology in everything from phone networks to medical databases; transport timetables to power grids.

So if we want to protect our modern world, we need to make sure we protect the technology that keeps everything running. And that’s why CyberFirst are training a new generation of cyber security specialists – with the CyberFirst degree apprenticeship.

Who runs CyberFirst?

CyberFirst was founded by GCHQ and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), as an initiative to help young people all over the UK to learn how to protect our digital world. With involvement from some of the biggest tech employers and household name businesses, we offer brilliant opportunities to train in one of today’s most-sought-after specialisms.

What’s on offer?

CyberFirst are looking for apprentices from all sorts of backgrounds, to start work in September 2020. Working within the UK government’s intelligence and national security community, you’ll learn first-hand how to protect the tech you love, with a balance of both practical work and academic study. You’ll get:

  • £19k salary, working in a real government role at GCHQ or NCSC
  • Paid tuition fees to study for a recognised cyber security degree while you work
  • A diverse community of support, working among professionals from a wide range of backgrounds and skillsets

Who can be a CyberFirst degree apprentice?

First things first – you don’t need to be a programmer. We do look for coders, but there are so many more skills involved in cyber security. Plus, if you do need coding skills, we’ll train you on the job. So, if you don’t know how to code yet, it’s open to you too. So what do you need, exactly?

  • UK nationals or dual nationals (subject to security clearance)
  • At least BBC (or predicted) in your A Levels (or equivalent to 112 UCAS points) in any subject – visit the UCAS Tariff calculator  to see how many points your qualifications are worth
  • A GCSE in Maths at 5 or above (or equivalent)
  • A passion for all things computing and digital
  • The curiosity to explore and master cyber security

That’s it. As long as you meet the criteria above, we want to hear from you. Whatever your background, whatever subjects you’ve studied – as long as you’ve got potential and a curiosity about tech, you could find your calling with us.

This is a CyberFirst world.

Train for it.
