Accountable To: Practice Manager
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week
Weekly Salary: GBP162.00 - GBP300.00 per week.

Purpose of the Post
We are looking to recruit an Apprentice/Trainee Dental Nurse to work as part of a dental team to assist in the delivery of dental care to patients. Most particularly by providing support and assistance the the dentist, hygienist and therapist, in clinical and non-clinical aspects of all patient care in line with practice procedures and protocols.
Job Summary
To work towards the Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing as agreed between you, the dental nurse, and named training provider.
Organisational Relationships The post holder will be directly accountable to the Practice Manager for the overall performance of the role.
Duties and Responsibilities Clinical
  • Assist the dental operator in organizing the day's activities.
  • Monitor day lists and appointment diary and update as necessary.
  • Prepare the surgery for use at the beginning of the session and clear up at the end of the session consistent with Health and Safety protocol.
  • Anticipate the dental operator's requirements across a broad range of clinical procedures.
  • Assist the dental operator in the provision of dental treatment and to supervise the patient until they are fit to leave the department.
  • Prepare filling and impression materials, instruments, equipment, dressings and syringes.
  • Use equipment such as hand instruments, aspiration equipment in a manner which minimises the risk of cross infection or soft tissue injury.
  • Provide pre and post-operative instructions for patients in agreement with the dental operator.
  • Assist the dental operator in making arrangements for appropriate follow up care.
  • Maintain hand pieces, aspirators and other equipment.
  • Process and mount radiographs.
  • Arrange for the timely supply of materials and laboratory work.
  • Utilise keyboard skills for data entry on dental software programme.
Reception
  • Undertake reception duties when required, for example; answering the telephone in a friendly, helpful and courteous manner
  • Print day lists and take appropriate cards from main filing cabinets
  • Welcome patients and visitors to the practice and direct them to the appropriate area, prepare patients for treatment.
  • Communicate appropriately and effectively in good English using appropriate terminology by spoken, written and electronic methods and maintain and develop these skills.
  • Make all the necessary patient checks in accordance with practice policy
  • Schedule appointments, through email or by telephone
  • Complete patient recalls and appointment reminder calls
  • Ensure the patient or patients representative has signed the appropriate treatment estimate and/or NHS form
  • Encourage prompt payments, calculate and collect patient charges in advance, recording receipt while adhering to the practices per payment policy
  • Offer sundry healthcare products to patients giving advice where necessary in accordance with practice policy and with recommendations from clinical staff
  • Comply with Health and Safety policy
  • Handle complaints in accordance with the Practice Complaints Procedure
General
  • Always ensure the care and welfare of patients in a friendly, helpful and courteous manner
  • Keep accurate clinical records and to ensure the recording methods are used in line with agreed practice policy and securely stored.
  • Observe patient confidentiality at all times. This includes preventing medical histories, treatment proposals, conversations, transactions, reactions to treatment being overheard.
  • Attend and participate in practice meetings
  • Register with the GDC following successful completion of your dental nursing qualification
  • Undergo training and comply with all safeguarding regulations
  • Other duties as necessary for the efficient operation of the practice
  • Attend CPD Courses and update training for medical emergencies, CPR
  • Undergo training as may be required to develop your skills and abilities e.g. Dental nursing qualification, CPR, IG toolkit etc.
  • Act in accordance with the practice rules and code of conduct
  • Work at other practice locations as and when required
  • Assist the manager and training team to train new employee when required
Undertake any reasonable duties allocated by the Practice Manager. The job holder will also be involved in working with the team to implement key processes and procedures which will enable improvements to the operational effectiveness within practices.
Comply with general managerial responsibility for ensuring all policies and procedures are implemented and applied effectively.
