Making a difference for young people in residential care

We're excited to be recruiting apprentices to roles in teams and Services across the Council. We are looking for people from all walks of life who:

You will complete yourChildren, Young People & Families Practitioner, Level 4 apprenticeship. This will give you great insight into the Council's work and different career opportunities in local government and public service.

You will be part of building a strong multidisciplinary team within our children's home, Olive House, to provide a high quality, holistic residential children's service for vulnerable looked after young people aged 13-18. Olive House provides a consistent and thoughtful approach to meeting the range of care needs of children and young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties, to help them make sense of their lives to date and move successfully into adult life.

You will be well supported through training opportunities within the team and Kensington and Chelsea's extensive corporate training opportunities.
  • To commit to doing the work required for your apprenticeship: this includes attending training and working with support to produce evidence of the skills and knowledge you require to complete your apprenticeship.
  • To communicate effectively with the young people and ensure that they are appropriately involved in decisions about their care and living arrangements, ensuring that their voices, wishes and feelings are central to their support plans, care plans and overall culture of the home.
  • To set appropriate boundaries and provide the level of supervision necessary to ensure that the young people are protected and their welfare promoted
  • To read referrals and support young people in their transition to the home, help them to settle in, and pay attention to their immediate needs.
  • To learn to undertake Keyworker responsibilities and tasks with individual young people and their families. To develop with others a support plan of their needs following a period of assessment and undertake tasks identified to ensure the support plan continues to meet their needs.
  • To undertake specific tasks to develop a partnership with families, other carers, professionals and agencies, to contribute to the care plan for each young person.
  • To support young people in making measurable progress towards achieving their educational goals and learning potential through; creating an aspirational and supportive learning environment; close working with educational providers and creatively overcoming the barriers to learning that each individual child may face.
  • To assist young people to develop their skills and experience in order to live independently, including assisting them in the handling of money and the purchase of clothing or other items
  • To attend and learn to chair planning, review and other meetings, contributing effectively and ensuring that minutes are taken and circulated where required.
  • To ensure that children take part in and benefit from a variety of activities, both inside and outside the home, that meet their needs and develop and reflect their creative, intellectual, physical and social interests and skills.
  • To support young people in practicing their faith and taking part in religious activities as an integral part helping them develop a positive identity and good self-esteem.
  • To contribute to a reflective, strength based, culture within the home where staff and children can develop positive relationships with each other based on mutual respect and trust.
  • To use regular supervision, as directed by the Centre Manager and Deputy Managers in order to develop and monitor work performance and obtain advice, assistance and support.
  • To develop skills and knowledge by means of appropriate training and use of written procedures.

Candidates must be over the age of 18 to apply due to the nature of the role.

Personal qualities

You must enjoy working with adolescents. You will have a NVQ Children and Young People (CYP) Level 3, or Children Work Force Development (CWFD) Level 3 qualification. You may have some experience of working in residential child care. Knowledge of good childcare practice will be essential as well as patience, resilience and the ability to cope under pressure.

This role involves working shifts, including weekends and sleep in duties evenly distributed amongst team members.

You'll need to commit to doing the work required for your apprenticeship: this includes attending training and working with support to produce evidence of the skills and knowledge you require to complete your apprenticeship.
  • Enjoy working with adolescents
  • Patience to respond positively to challenging or disruptive behaviour
  • Resilience to provide positive and continued support to children and young people in emotional crisis. Able to cope under pressure
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team, and support colleagues.


Desired qualifications

Typically candidates will have achieved a grade C or above in at least five GCSEs and/or A levels or equivalent.

You may also:
  • Have other relevant qualifications and experience related to residential child care Job Title: Children, Young People & Families Practitioner Apprentice (Level 4)
  • Have passed an aptitude test with a focus on functional maths
  • Hold a minimum of 48 UCAS points.

Knowledge & Experience:

You will have, or need to develop:
  • Knowledge of good childcare practice
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Children Act 1989, the revised Children's Home Regulations 2015, and the Quality Care Standards
  • Knowledge and understanding of needs of young people from different cultures, ethnic and religious backgrounds and those with disabilities
  • Awareness and understanding of issues relating to sexuality, sexual abuse and child protection
  • Knowledge of money management, budgetary issues, job finding and the benefit system to help young people towards independence
  • Knowledge of Child protection procedures.
