The Laboratory Science Degree Apprenticeship Scheme recruits and develops A-Level / BTEC qualified (or equivalent) individuals to become the next generation of laboratory scientists for the chemical / materials / automotive industry. Laboratory Science Degree Apprentices will develop an understanding of working in the chemical industry with focus on the Automotive and construction business sectors. This will include the development of an understanding of the chemistry of the materials used and their use in various customer applications.

The Lab Apprentice Degree Apprenticeship is a five year programme, during which you will work towards the Level 6 Laboratory Science Degree. This involves an initial phase of chemical and materials appreciation and awareness, followed by exposure to a series of different customer industries to further develop your understanding of the application of bonding agents.

During the apprenticeship, you will work on a variety of projects which you will complete technical reports on, allowing you to record evidence of the knowledge, competencies and experiences you are gaining. Final work-placements will be determined as you progress through the apprenticeship. Final placements will be aligned to business requirements at the time.

Examples of Occupational Duties:
  • Provide materials science advice utilising advanced practical, conceptual and technological expertise.
  • Research, design, and optimise innovative processes to reduce costs and environmental impact as well as iterating novel products for new market opportunities and societal demands and needs.
  • Innovate and/or translate materials science R&D into the production of new products and analyse and evaluate suitability of design concepts for production.
  • Analyse and utilise data to create accurate reports whilst maintaining data hygiene, security, and being mindful of GDPR.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

An interest in the chemical sector and a keen appreciation of engineering and mathematics.

Personal qualities

You should have a keen interest in chemical and engineering technology and be prepared to study this to degree level.

Good attention to detail and awareness of health and safety are also essential qualities for this apprenticeship.

Desired qualifications

You will need five GCSEs grade A*-C/ 4-9 (or equivalent) including maths, English and Science/technical subject and 240/96 UCAS points or equivalent (excluding UCAS points gained at AS level) to include maths plus one other STEM subject (excluding General Studies).

All applicants will be expected to be medically fit as deemed necessary to perform the role, be eligible to work in the UK and be able to successfully achieve security clearance.

Upon successful completion of the Apprenticeship programme there are development opportunities within the organisation in the R&D, QC, Technical service departments along with other potential roles within HB Fuller.
