Do you have an interest in designing, building and running digital and technology services, which are transforming the lives of millions?
If you are creative, a good communicator, a problem solver who can use initiative, and have an eye for detail, then you have the potential to fill one of our apprentice roles. This could lead you into a career as a software developer, network engineer, business analyst and more.
This is a two-year Level 4 higher apprenticeship with a salary between £19,500 and £27,000 (£22,000 minimum in London).
What you’ll do
Working alongside digital and technology professionals, you’ll learn a range of specialist skills that may include, coding, website development, extracting and understanding data, and presenting information in creative and interesting ways. You will also develop your organisation and communication skills.
What you’ll learn
You’ll study 1 of the following Level 4 standards:
- Network engineer
- Data analyst
- Software developer
- Software tester
The apprenticeship you’ll be assigned will depend on your location, though they will all give you a great introduction into the digital industry and a firm foundation to a digital career.
The learning programme lasts for approximately 2 years. You’ll spend 80% of this time in your role and 20% doing classroom training with our learning provider, online learning, self-study, or completing assignments. Your assessment will include the submission of a portfolio, project work, an interview, an exam, and meetings with your personal coach, mentor, workplace adviser or buddy.
To achieve your Level 4 apprenticeship certificate (a qualification in its own right), in the standard you are taking, you will need to have successfully completed all your work, assignments, exams and produced portfolio evidence that demonstrates all the competencies included in the apprenticeship standard.

What we’re looking for
We’re looking for apprentices who:
- have a genuine interest in and passion for technology
- have enthusiasm and a willingness to try out new things, explore and innovate
- are able to combine technical ability with being a good communicator
To apply, you’ll need at least:
5 GCSEs, at grade C and above, or the new grade 4 and above, including English Language and Maths (or equivalent)
2 A levels, at grade C and above, preferably in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

You’ll also need to check you meet the general entry requirements, such as age, nationality and residency.
After the apprenticeship
Completing the scheme will open up a wide variety of routes and opportunities for you within digital technology and provide you with the building blocks for a successful career either in or outside the Civil Service.
Once you’ve successfully completed your apprenticeship, you’ll be eligible to apply without a degree for the Fast Stream. This is the Civil Service’s prestigious graduate development programme which prepares participants for leadership roles within the organisation.
