Start Date
18-24 months

The commercial apprenticeship is an opportunity to develop the specialist skills that are increasingly recognised by employers as valuable across all sectors. These skills are especially important in the public sector with the government spending £240 billion across the sector every year.

There’s a wide range of experience available in the different posts which focus around the government’s procurement of goods and services. You will also take a diploma with the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply, which will support your development within the role and beyond the apprenticeship.

This is a two-year Level 4 higher apprenticeship with a salary between £19,500 and £27,000 (£22,000 minimum in London).

What you’ll do
Improving commercial skills is one of the Civil Service’s highest priorities so you’ll receive plenty of support as you develop your abilities and build your professional networks.

Your role could include:

  • working on the MoJ’s prison catering contract – managing the planning, preparation and logistics that make sure prisons receive food on time each day
  • pre-market engagement for HMRC’s new IT systems
  • creating templates to assist a rail franchise in the Department for Transport
  • managing the contract award of the HM Passport Office’s courier services – a contract which is worth over £30,000

What you’ll learn
You’ll work towards achieving a Level 4 Diploma with the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply; the well-recognised professional qualification body in commercial procurement.

The qualification takes around 14 to 18 months to complete and is made up of 5 modules over this period. An exam-based qualification, you’ll have tutored learning sessions and lots of individual and peer-learning resources to help you achieve the grade you would like.

Whilst you’ll get some study leave you will also be expected to study in your own time, particularly around exam time.

You’ll receive coaching to ensure you’re on track to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to complete the apprenticeship, which will put you in a fantastic position for whatever you decide to do upon completion of the scheme.
