A rail engineering advanced Technician may work on site or in a depot or in a technical office. They will lead and supervise individuals and teams in the delivery of rail engineering tasks. Their work will require an understanding of how the railway works as an integrated, complex system in order to take proactive actions and decisions to avoid Railway asset, equipment, process and systems failures and will include involvement in aspects of:

A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) grade C/4 or above, including maths and English, candidates will typically have a level 3 qualification or equivalent, or relevant industry experience.

The possibility of becoming a full time employee of DB Cargo UK following on from a successful apprenticeship.
Things to consider
Apprentices could be required to work extended hours on short notice in emergency situations.
Normal rostered hours subject to change by mutual agreement.
There will be the need to travel to attend college, either to the Birmingham or the Doncaster campus.

- The construction, installation, renewal, enhancement and modification of the railway
- Fault finding and diagnosis, maintenance and replacement of a range of complex systems and components
- Ensuring assets are installed, enhanced, replaced, maintained, tested and inspected to specification maintaining required records and making recommendations for and delivery of system improvements
The successful candidate will also be required to:
- Carry out training required for role with minimum COSS Sentinel competency
- Undertake a Three Year, Level Four Rail & Infrastructure Technician apprenticeship
- Attend the High Speed Rail College Doncaster on a day release format
- Patrol DB cargo yards and sidings along with any third party locations
- Correctly identify defects and assess the extent, risks arising from those defects
- Undertake minor maintenance to the infrastructure as part of the patrolling duties
- Work within the small maintenance team undertaking heavier track repair activities
- Undertake on-call duties, when suitably qualified
- Lodge away from home where required
