MATERIALS LABORATORIES DEGREE APPRENTICESHIP

Learn how we make materials innovative and safe

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

This apprenticeship will see you work with world-class scientists and engineers to make sure the materials we use are as innovative and safe as possible. You will be able to build upon your knowledge gained in you’re A-level Maths, Physics, Chemistry etc.

You can expect to gain an understanding of different materials and their uses, failure investigation studies, research and development, process control and laboratory related improvement activities.

Key skills for this role will include team-working, influencing and a focus on delivery.

WHAT YOU COULD BE DOING:

Building on your A-level Maths and Science knowledge, you will work with world-class scientists and engineers to make sure the materials we use are as innovative and safe as possible.

This apprenticeship is made up of a variety of 3-6 month placements, each based within the Manufacturing laboratories or specialist Materials teams. This will give you excellent exposure to our state-of-the-art facilities, as you experience life on the shop floor, use laboratory equipment to conduct tests and analysis, and take on a variety of office-based responsibilities.

Specifically, you will focus on how materials behave and how we integrate them into our engines. This could mean working alongside Materials Scientists and Designers to ascertain what materials should be used on a new part.

It could mean helping to design materials within the special processes lab. Or it could mean solving problems that arise with materials either during the manufacturing process or when engines come back to be serviced.

Areas you will learn about include: different materials and their uses; failure investigation studies; research and development; process control and laboratory-related improvement activities.

Plus you will gain experience of various special processes used during component manufacture, such as chemical processing, laser processes, machining, welding, heat treatment, casting, forging and various coatings.

By the end of the apprenticeship, you will have developed a strong understanding of the physics and chemistry that lie behind our engineering decisions, and will be perfectly positioned to solve problems, maintain product integrity and continue innovating as part of one of our expert teams.
