Job description
The Cabinet Office is running an apprenticeship programme to recruit a number of vibrant, enthusiastic individuals with a passion to learn. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain an understanding of how the Civil Service operates, whilst working at the heart of Central Government.

You may be leaving school or college but not necessarily, apprenticeships are for people from a wide range of backgrounds including people who may be looking to change career direction, returning to work after a break or starting their civil service career.

At your interview, we will talk to you about your career ambitions and which apprenticeship might suit you.

Apprenticeships we have on offer include Business Administration, HR, Finance and more. The apprenticeship you will be offered if successful will be dependent on your ambition and our business need.

Cabinet Office

At the Cabinet Office we support the Prime Minister and ensure the effective running of government. The Cabinet Office is the corporate headquarters for government, in partnership with HM Treasury, and a policy department that challenges, supports, leads or provides services to other Ministerial Departments.

This is an excellent entry point into the Civil Service and is a great opportunity to gain insight into the workings of the Cabinet Office. Successful applicants will work towards a work-based qualification and receive support from the department including 20% time off for learning.

Candidates who pass the sift and interview stages will be posted into roles graded at a Band B1. Cabinet Office starting salary is GBP24,759 (London).

Alongside your role, you will work towards a minimum Level 3 qualification in an applicable area, for more information on the qualifications that we currently offer please visit our Apprenticeship page on Vercida;

There are great career opportunities in the Cabinet Office, you may be able to proceed onto a higher level qualification or apply for permanent job opportunities within Government.

Benefits include:

  • flexible working options
  • our EDENRED discount platform,
  • 25 days holiday (which increases yearly until our maximum of 30 days),
  • the Employee Assistance Programme, offering free and confidential support to employees with a dedicated website and LiveChat feature
  • a variety of staff networks to meet colleagues who share similar interests or beliefs
Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for an apprenticeship, you must:

  • Be aged 16 or older;
  • Not be in full-time education;
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK - if you are an EEA citizen, you must have the right of abode in the UK, and have been ordinarily resident in the EEA (including other countries determined to be within the EEA or those with bilateral agreements) for at least the previous three years on the first day of the apprenticeship;
  • Undertake only one apprenticeship at any one time;
  • Meet the stated entry requirements of the programme (including prior learning and qualifications);
  • Normally be employed for at least 30 hours a week for the duration of the apprenticeship but please call us for a conversation if you have difficulty meeting this requirement and we can discuss your individual circumstances; and
  • not have completed the same level and subject area of qualification before
Please note that you can undertake an apprenticeship at the same, or lower, level as a qualification that you already hold. However, as above this cannot be in the same subject.
If you work part-time for fewer than 30 hours a week, you may be able to train as an apprentice. Exceptions can be made due to personal situations or because of the industry or the job role. In such a case, you would need to work at least 16 hours a week.

Application Process:

We want to know why you are looking for an apprenticeship and why you want to join the Civil Service in no more than 500 words. This first stage of the application process is designed to test your motivational fit for an apprenticeship within Cabinet Office. We would ask you please upload your answers to these questions under the Statement of Suitability section of your application.

At interview, we will test Communicating & Influencing and also ask some Strengths based questions; you can find out more about CS Behaviours here and Strengths here. You will also be asked to complete a written exercise, designed to test Delivering At Pace. We expect the interview to last no longer than an hour.

If we have more successful candidates than vacancies, we may put you on a reserve list to offer you a role at a later date and/or we may offer you a role at the grade below (Band C).
