What will the apprentice be doing?

Your role within the Programme Management Office (PMO) is to support Programme and Project Managers in the delivery of their projects.

Within 8-12 weeks of starting with us you will be enrolled on an Associate Project Manager Level 4 Apprenticeship, which is the academic equivalent of an HNC.

In parallel to this formal training you will learn how an effective Programme Management Office operates and will play a key role in supporting the delivery of major projects within Defra.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

During the apprenticeship you will achieve the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to achieve an IPMA Level D qualification or APM Project Management Qualification.

Training will be delivered remotely via online learning and virtual workshops.

Key areas covered are:

• Principles of project management
• Communications and stakeholder management
• Business case, budgets and cost control
• Planning, risk and quality
• Project leadership

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

This is a permanent position and the apprenticeship will provide you with the foundation to develop a project management career within Defra.

At the outset you will register as a student member of the Association for Project Management which is the first step towards full membership. You will be eligible for progression to associate membership upon successful completion of the apprenticeship. Full membership can be attained as you gain further experience and professional development with us.

Things to consider

The successful candidate must have one to two years' experience in administrative work, preferably gained in an office environment and will be looking to build on that experience. In addition you will need to be a self starter, able to use your initiative and must be able to manage and adhere to agreed governance processes.
