The Digital and Technology Solutions Professional Degree Apprenticeship (DTS) is a work-based higher education programme that integrates academic and work-based learning in a way that can be delivered flexibly.

As a Digital and Technology Solutions (DTS) Apprentice you will be based within the innovative, CIO Portfolio where you will be working on exciting, ground-breaking digital projects relating to learning technology, cyber security, student analytics and IT.

You will spend the first two years of a four-year degree rotating across the four units, spending six months in each area, gaining a broad knowledge and understanding of each specialism.

From year 3 and into year 4 you will revert to your chosen specialism, spending most of your time in the relevant area.

1. Cyber security apprentice role:

The cyber security apprentice will develop skills and knowledge relating to the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the Open University's Information and Information Security systems. They will develop a broad understanding of network infrastructure, software and data to identify where threat and hazard can occur. Key Responsibilities A cyber security apprentice will work across the following areas:

Governance
  • Information Security strategy
  • Use of Management Information techniques

Compliance
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of selected legislation, regulation, standards and framework, e.g. GDPR, ISO27001, Payment Card Industry
  • Audit and 3rd party security assurance

Security Risk Management
  • Security risk assessments and scenario-based impact analysis
  • Risk reporting, risk management and security advisory
  • Security threat landscape trend analysis Operational Security • Incident response, vulnerability scanning, and forensics
  • Security controls testing
  • Information Security training and awareness

2.Data Analyst apprentice role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out robust analysis using a range of data sets, including both qualitative and quantitative data, and interpret findings to present appropriate conclusions or report/dashboard outputs
  • Bring together the output from analysis into simple and persuasive stories and present these in visual reports (slide-decks or written) or dashboards
  • Engage with stakeholders across the University to understand their reporting and data analysis needs
  • Produce dashboards which are fit for purpose and provide insight and narrative with recommendations to the end-users based on data and to support reporting to management groups.
  • Ensure requests for data and analysis are completed in a timely manner, and communicate effectively with colleagues within and outside the team to ensure expectations are fulfilled

3. IT Software Engineer apprentice role.

Key Responsibilities A Software Engineer apprentice will work across the following areas:
  • The writing and maintenance of application source code that adheres to standards and quality requirements
  • The creation and maintenance of applications following the process of conceiving, specifying, designing, programming, documenting, testing, and bug fixing
  • Provide technical input to the analysis of business requirements, write technical specifications and do work breakdown planning from requirements and design specifications
  • Participate in work prioritisation, work estimation and planning following agile scrum methodology
  • Review designs for software applications to verify they meet requirements, typically from User Stories
  • Peer review coded solutions produced by team members to ensure quality and adherence to standards
  • Provide technical expertise and assist the technical lead and project manager in removing blockers
  • Liaise with varied teams to resolve any cross-function issues and escalate, if necessary, to senior team

4. LXT Software Engineer apprentice role.

A Software Engineer apprentice will work across the following areas:
  • Provide ongoing operational support for OU digital learning systems, carrying out administration, configuration, issue investigation and user support
  • Support and contribute to the roll out and adoption of new learning tools, products and services to stakeholders, and provide appropriate guidance and training to staff
  • Work with stakeholders from across the OU to understand, interpret and evaluate their learning system requirements, preparing user stories and specifications as require
  • Work with internal and external developers to incorporate these requirements into the development and enhancement of new software, tools and approaches
  • Coordinate testing, such as user acceptance testing, accessibility testing, and usability testing, of new products and services
  • Create, manage and maintain internal and student-facing guidance and exemplar websites
  • Communicate effectively and persuasively, both in person and remotely, utilising a range of media, with internal and external stakeholders
  • Contribute to or deliver clear and professional business documentation, such as project plans and business cases
  • Develop productive working relationships with business partners across the Open University and externally
  • Use and present data and analytics to help provide insight and inform decision making

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Excellent team working skills, with the ability to collaborate in multi-functional teams with other apprentices, analysts, project managers and subject matter experts
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both oral and written, and good attention to detail
  • Able to apply analytical and critical thinking skills when considering complex situations and problems
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn specialist data visualisation applications to create visually impactful presentation of data analysis.
  • Good attention to detail, demonstrating thoroughness and focus

Desired qualifications

As an apprentice, you'll receive on-the-job experience along with formal training to gain the knowledge and skills you'll need to progress in a digital and/or technology-based career. You will be surrounded by subject matter experts all with a common goal - to support your successful completion of the apprenticeship.

We offer a higher than average apprenticeship salary, 30 days holiday per annum plus Bank Holidays and Christmas closure days, and a whopping 20% study time for your apprenticeship qualification!
