We are currently looking for highly motivated young scientists to join the BioTech Sciences department at UCB's UK Research and Development Hub in Slough. Working within Upstream Process Sciences you will be part of a team of scientists developing processes for the production of novel protein-based therapeutics for areas of unmet patient need.

You will be responsible for laboratory-based activities using a range of cutting-edge scientific technologies. You will help to enable the laboratory to function effectively whilst adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines. You will receive training in all techniques and will have your own mentor to provide help and advice during your time at UCB. This represents a great opportunity to work in industry-leading laboratories at the cutting edge of drug development.

Specific duties and responsibilities:

The position is laboratory based and will primarily involve the undertaking of a range of analytical biochemical techniques in order to understand the impact of cell culture and microbial fermentation parameters on process performance, biology of the cells, product quality attributes and impact on downstream processing.

The candidate will be responsible for operating multiple HPLC and UPLC methods to enable understanding of the impact on product related species, as well as capillary electrophoresis and plate-based assays to supply critical information required for the optimization of bioprocess cultures.

The candidate will also be responsible for the purification of process samples by affinity chromatography methods using small scale high throughput methods with a Tecan robotic platform. Furthermore the candidate will use flow cytometry, metabolite analysis and microscopy to enable further understanding of culture performance and viability. Where required, the candidate will work closely with in-process analytical colleagues and participate in method troubleshooting and method development.

Tasks typically involve:
  • Undertaking a range of analytical biochemistry techniques in order to understand the impact of upstream process parameters on process performance, biology of the cells and product quality attributes
  • Purification of process samples by affinity chromatography methods using small scale high throughput methods with a Tecan robotic platform
  • Carrying out tasks accurately and following defined methodologies to carry out analyses
  • Providing traceable records of lab work such as batch records, electronic lab notebooks, excel templates, lab procedures, protocols and reports
  • Ensuring maintenance and functionality of the laboratory and analytical equipment in collaboration with internal teams
