Apprentices will have the opportunity to work across a multitude of features across various departments, from teams using Spring Cloud and Webflux for reactive Java services, or Node.js driving React web applications and even polyglot microservices. To teams using the latest in Cloud Native technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes and Golang. With the latest versions of Kotlin and Swift language features driving the mobile team. We're often experimenting with new technologies; it's all about picking the right tool for the right job and giving you the skills and knowledge to use them.

 

We are looking for Apprentices to join in our 18 Month Software Engineering Apprenticeship which will give you real on-the-job work experience whilst allowing you to gain a Level 4 Java Software Engineering qualification. Our Program has been designed to nurture our next generation of technical specialists and leaders. We’ll provide you with continuous training and development, 20% in house classroom-based training with 80% on the job learning. With a tailored development plan and opportunities to increase your skills throughout, you'll receive support in your placement team from your leader, buddy and mentor, to aid you in securing a permanent role in one of our teams, We are committed to providing Apprentices the opportunity to work on projects that can make a long-lasting impact on the business, as well as a good experience through multiple networking events during the programme.

 

What type of work can you expect to do in Technology at American Express?

  • Identify exciting opportunities for adopting new technologies to solve existing needs and predict future challenges

  • Develop software applications as part of a Scrum team

  • Learn technical skills, write code, conduct code reviews and testing

  • Work with product managers to prioritise features for new products and manage a list of requirements based on industry trends and new technologies

  • Design work, such as user experience or graphic design

  • Working and collaborating in an Agile Environment

  • Bespoke learning and development programme, e.g. technical, leadership, networking and soft skills

  • Take part in social activities, charity days, and projects with other Apprentices and Graduates

Minimum Qualifications

Are you up for the challenge?

Required:

  • Creative, collaborative and curious thinker with a desire to learn

  • An Eye for detail and the ability to identify opportunities for innovation and change

  • Passion for technology

  • Ability to effectively communicate with non-technical business partners

  • Capable of working well and contributing meaningfully in a team environment

  • Fluent English communication

  • Prior ​coding knowledge/experience in at least one programming language

Good to have:

  • Experience of developing products or projects either in an academic, professional or personal setting

  • Some entry level software development experience or design or creative experience

Educational Requirements:

  • A Levels preferably grade C or above (or equivalent i.e. BTEC) in STEM related subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths)

  • A*-C Grade GCSE Maths & English

  • *Please note that if you have studied/achieved a Level 4 or above in computer science, you are not eligible to apply*

American Express Technology Apprenticeships

Our Apprenticeship Scheme has been designed to nurture our next generation of technical specialists and leaders. With continuous training, a tailored development plan and opportunities to increase your skills throughout, you'll receive support in your placement team from your leader, buddy and mentor to aid you in securing a permanent role in one of our teams. Training & Development

The apprenticeship programme is intended for people with very limited experience of software development. We will teach all of the skills and tools required to become a full-stack developer, turning you into someone who can work with all different parts of a software program - the database, the backend the service layer and the website component. 

Throughout the 18 months, we’ll provide you with continuous training and development, 20% in house classroom-based training with 80% on the job learning. By the end of the training you’ll have undertaken a Level 4 Software Engineer Apprenticeship. You will understand how software goes from an idea to a functional, well-maintained application, and be capable of slotting into lots of different types of teams and projects. 

Languages you’ll learn to use; Java, SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Maven, Spring and more!

On the job learning

As an Apprentice Software Engineer in our Technology organisation, you will be part of a small, co-located, Agile engineering team. You will gain hands-on experience of coding in your team and have the opportunity to take part in activities such as networking with external start-ups, competing in hackathons and supporting local community work.
