Start Date
This is a new role training as an apprentice to become a Pharmacy Technician both in primary and secondary care - in University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) and with Waterside Primary Care Network GP practices. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone interested in a pharmacy career to 'earn while they learn' in different NHS settings to complete a L4 qualification and register as a Pharmacy Technician. The start date is 1st February 2021 and this is a 2 year apprenticeship.

Pharmacy Technicians have a variety of roles which you will undertake during your training. You will be supported by an experienced Pharmacy Training Team and pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in the GP practices. Current trainees who started in September on the UHS only programme feel encouraged and enabled to develop their skills in the pharmacy. The pharmacy service in UHS operates between 8.30 and 7pm, different hours in each area and there is currently one weekend duty every six weeks on a Saturday. The apprenticeship is delivered virtually from the University of East Anglia and there is excellent partnership working between them and the Pharmacy Training Team to ensure a good quality learning and development experience.

The Waterside PCN operates across several GP practices and care homes. They are based largely in Hythe and Dibden Purlieu. The Pharmacy team are keen to deliver this training programme with new roles for Pharmacy Technicians developing in primary care.

For your apprenticeship there is a programme of study days and on the job training. You will rotate around the various areas of pharmacy such as dispensary, aseptic services, on the wards talking to patients and completing medicines reconciliation and in the pharmacy at the Royal South Hants Hospital. You will spend at least 25% of the 2 year programme on placement in the GP practices supporting the pharmacists and pharmacy technicians for example with prescription queries and medicines reconciliation in care homes. You will be required to travel for this role, usually either at the hospital all day or based in one or more GP practices or care homes each day. The variety of the training programme is something current apprentices appreciate as well as the career opportunities registration as a Pharmacy Technician brings.

You must have 5 GCSE passes including Maths, English and a Science, you need to be committed to learning and completing coursework to deadlines. You must be able to work accurately, communicate effectively and be confident to move between teams regularly. An interest in the Pharmacy profession is key, for example currently working in Community or Hospital Pharmacy would be beneficial but not essential.
