University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust Estates department is looking to recruit a Mechanical Engineering Maintenance apprentice based at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Apprenticeship summary

Annual salary (AfC Band 4 annexe 21)

£14,229.80 (year 1) - £15,342.40 (year 2) - £16,419.00 (year 3)

Once successfully qualified, the salary rises to £24,157 (2020/21 +RRP of £3277-00)

Working week

Mon-Fri 08.00 - 16.00 (30 mins Lunch)

Total hours per week: 37.50

You will work as part of the Estates and facilities department at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. You will be learning and enhancing your skills to become a competent mechanical craftsman.

The Main Duties include:
  • Fault finding and repair of air conditioning and ventilation plant.
  • Boilers - steam, high temperature/high pressure and low-pressure hot water, gas and oil fired.
  • Cold and hot water services.
  • Compressed air plant and services.
  • Heating services.
  • Kitchen and catering equipment.
  • To be prepared to work in hazardous and noisy areas taking all safety measures to prevent danger, avoid injury and prevent damage to buildings, plant and equipment.
  • Undertake essential repair maintenance activities as directed by Workshop Supervisor or Management.
  • To actively participate in the recording of maintenance information through the recording of work carried out in the form of information fed back on computer aided facilities management systems, work sheets or other paperwork necessary.
  • All other engineering services under the control of the Estates Manager.
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance inspections and commissioning tests in accordance with Trust procedures.

The vacancy is based at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, but there may be a need to travel to other local sites on occasion.

Requirements and prospects

  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Assess and determine corrective action during fault findings and testing activities, including the interpretation of test results
  • To receive working instructions and undertake tasks as directed
  • Organise day to day work activities under the direction of the Workshop Supervisor

  • Mustbe able to work well as a team and prioritise tasks efficiently

Qualifications required

GCSE Grade C and above (or equivalent) in Maths, English, Science and 1 other subject.

Future prospects

The post is a fixed term apprentice role for 2-4 years. During that time the apprentice will be comprehensively trained so that if positions throughout the Trust become available in the future the individual will be able to apply. They will also gain experience of various functions within the Trust and come into contact with a wide range of internal customers giving them a good understanding of how the Trust operates and what other areas of work they may be interested in.

Things to consider

Like all apprenticeships, this requires a long term commitment - there will be assignments and log book entries to complete as well as homework from college. This is a fantastic opportunity to work within the region's largest healthcare facility whilst you work towards nationally recognised qualifications. UHP Estates engineering apprentices are paid in accordance with NHS Agenda for Change Annexe 21 pay scale.
