Our Barnard Castle facility is a key drug product manufacturing site within the GSK network, and one of GSKs flagship New Product Introduction sites, bringing ground-breaking medicines to people all over the world at the right quality and the right price. At Barnard Castle, we proudly manufacture 38 different medicines in over 1500 pack variations to treat HIV, cancer, infectious diseases, migraines, psoriasis, dermatitis, asthma, cold sores and acne, to name just a few, which we supply to over 130 markets around the world.

The 3-year apprenticeship is a blended approach of distance learning and block release.

You will be studying towards aLevel 5 Apprenticeship in Biological Science (Biology). After completing the level 5 you may be offered the opportunity to go on to study for a level 6 (degree level) apprenticeship.

If you are offered an apprenticeship; you will have a buddy or a mentor who will help you to prepare for joining GSK and will be there to offer support and guidance throughout your apprenticeship. Working with both your line and programme manager we want to identify the right opportunities to help you succeed in the short term and throughout your career with us.

What will you do?

You will be part of our laboratory team based at our Barnard Castle pharmaceutical manufacturing site. As a laboratory analyst in our Microbiology laboratories you will help to ensure that our products meet strict quality specifications and microbiological limits.You will also experience everything from traditional techniques used for testing of raw materials and finished products, to the use of bespoke automated equipment for microbiological identification.Some of your time will also be spent working with the Process Monitoring team taking and evaluating samples from the manufacturing areas and cleanroom environments.

Your duties might include:
  • Learning analytical methods and operating specialist laboratory equipment to test our pharmaceutical products and raw materials
  • Learning about and identifying different microbes
  • Environmental monitoring and microbiology sampling across the site in clean rooms and manufacturing areas
  • Carrying out data analysis, interpreting data and report writing

You'll be excited by the thought of:

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs or equivalent at grades 9-5/A*-Cincluding English Language (not Literature), Science and maths
  • To have achieved or be predicted to achieve a minimum of 96 UCAS points from your top 3 A-Levels (or equivalent) not including General Studies
  • A Level Biology at grade C/5, equivalent or above. A level Chemistry would be a bonus

After completing the level 5 you may be offered the opportunity to go on to study for a level 6 (degree level) apprenticeship.
