A career that will deliver change. Together, we can help Britain achieve net zero.

During your apprenticeship you’ll be looking to make an impact – using your skills, knowledge and passion to achieve great things. So how about taking on the challenge of beating climate change?

Being Britain’s biggest generator of low carbon electricity, EDF are not only talking about climate change, we’re doing something about it. We’re committed to reducing carbon emissions to zero, generating power from clean sources like wind, nuclear and solar, leading the charge for electric vehicles and investing in new carbon cutting technologies.

We proudly work together to champion a low carbon lifestyle and collaborate widely in our search for innovations to achieve more.  Build your future with us. Together we’ll help Britain achieve net zero.

The Opportunity:

During the course of this 4-year Degree Apprenticeship, you’ll learn from our industry-leading experts and gain valuable experience, whilst studying for a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. You can expect on-the-job training and the kind of practical experience you simply can't get on campus. On the scheme you'll follow the Level 6 Nuclear Scientist Nuclear Engineer Apprentice Standard.

The Training Programme:

Year one: You’ll be in full time residential study at the National College for Nuclear (staying there is optional dependent on your current residence), completing a foundation year in engineering including both academic and hands on learning within a realistic training environment. You’ll undertake foundation training courses and complete inductions and orientations at your EDF base location.

Years two and three: Your time will be split between your studies and on the job learning at your EDF location. You’ll complete three, four week blocks of residential study specialising in your chosen field and will then have the opportunity to develop and build on these in your workplace.

Year four: You’ll spend most of your time at your EDF location, whilst continuing your studies through long distance learning.  You’ll have developed your knowledge and skills from your studies and in the workplace and you will have captured the learning evidence as part of your training and development portfolio. The final stage of your apprenticeship will involve you completing a significant work based project which will be required as evidence of completion and qualification for the degree apprenticeship award.

As well as all the support you need, you’ll also enjoy plenty of opportunities to get involved in meaningful and challenging work once your studies are underway. That doesn’t mean you’ll have too much on your plate. You’ll have to put a lot of work in to manage your studies and your day-to-day duties but as you’ll be on block release from work when you’re studying, we can make sure we manage your workload accordingly.

The Future:

Once you’ve completed the scheme, you’ll have both academic qualifications and years of experience within EDF. That means you’ll be in the best possible position to continue your career. The future is yours for the taking!

The Location:

During the apprenticeship you will be working within a team at the following Hinkley Point C locations: Bristol, Aztec West (North Bristol) or on site in Bridgwater.  Your time will be split between your EDF workplace and the National College for Nuclear (southern hub).

The Skills:

  • 102 UCAS points - ideally three A-Levels (at grade C or above), including maths and a science subject or a relevant Level 3 qualification, such as a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma with a strong mathematical element
  • Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm for engineering in the nuclear industry
  • Clear ambition to develop an a career within EDF Energy
  • Ability to engage people at all levels and work within a team

Compensation & Benefits:

  • 17,335 a year with annual pay increases
  • Pension scheme
  • 25 days’ paid holiday
  • Wellbeing and support services
  • Flexible benefits package
