The role is that of a Multi-Skilled Engineering Apprentice within the site's engineering team, covering both electrical and mechanical disciplines. With the ever-increasing demands of new technologies arriving on-site, coupled with the challenges of maximising availability and output from 70+ years old kit, the need for technical expertise, both electrical and mechanical, across a 24/7 shift pattern is essential in supporting the site's operational needs. The Engineering Apprentice will work closely with Shift Engineers, Engineering Team Leaders and Engineering Managers, as well as interacting daily with operations colleagues such as Line Captains, Operators and QA Technologists.

Duties will include, but not limited to:
  • Preventative maintenance on machines and equipment
  • Responding to emergency machine break downs
  • Overhaul and repair of machines and equipment
  • Ensuring machines and equipment on site are safe, working efficiently and fit for purpose

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • No prerequisite experience required but a demonstrable interest in engineering through school or a hobby would be advantageous
  • Aptitude for practical science or engineering skills
  • The ability to work as a team member and possess good interpersonal, communication and literacy skills
  • To be IT literate and familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel or equivalent software

  • Highly motivated with the ability to self-manage
  • Ability to take on new skills and knowledge and apply these in the workplace
  • Ability to work efficiently and accurately
  • To work with efficiency, accuracy and to be able to meet deadlines
  • To be able to prioritise workload and work under own initiative
  • High level of flexibility and dependability

Desired qualifications

A minimum of 4 GCSEs (or equivalent), at grade 9 - 4 (A* - C) including English, maths, and a science related subject.

Future prospects

Employment as a shift engineer, line leader or manager.

Things to consider

The initial shift pattern will be Monday-Friday, but may require shift work as your knowledge and experience grows.
