Purpose of Role:

The purpose of the role is to be an apprentice engineer at the Cell and Gene therapy Development Centre, in London.

As a member of the Industrialisation team the successful candidate will work across a range of cell and gene therapy focused projects providing research support for both process optimisation and analytical development. This position will provide access and training on the latest technologies used for bioprocess automation and experience in the use of a range of analytical techniques.

The successful candidate will be involved in the execution of laboratory-based tasks to assist senior team members to deliver projects to agreed timelines and budget.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Core engineering principles including mathematics and science
  • Perform laboratory-based activities to contribute to the development of research-based manufacturing processes. As such awareness of operating within a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) environment would be advantageous
  • Laboratory-based activities can include, but are not limited to, media preparation, operating automated bioreactor systems to culture various cell types, and performing routine assays such as flow cytometry, RT-qPCR and ELISA
  • Training on process and plant engineering at relevant CGT Catapult facilities
  • Support laboratory operations by operating under aseptic technique, ensuring adequate reagent supply and that equipment is safe, calibrated and ready to use
  • Adhere to the company's health and safety policies, be able to comply with quality management system procedures and electronic laboratory notebook (eLN) for data capture

  • Good oral communication skills including project team updates through PowerPoint presentations to the senior group
  • Good written communication skills including report writing, data presentation and protocol writing
  • Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records
  • Good IT skills including experience of data analysis and structure
  • Strong interest in cell and gene therapies


Personal qualities

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • A good team player but also be able to work independently


Desired qualifications

Education / Qualifications:
  • Level 3 qualifications providing the appropriate number of UCAS points for entry onto the engineering Level 6 programme
  • A-levels/ B-Tech or equivalent in at least one science or engineering related subject including maths


Future prospects

  • Upon completion of the Degree Apprenticeship,BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering degree will be achieved along with a Degree Apprenticeship qualification
  • As the degree is accredited by the IChemE (Institution of Chemical Engineers), this provides a pathway to professional accreditation with the Engineering Council UK, as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer
