Joining theProject Development EngineerHigher Apprentice programme,you will work with experienced engineers to determine what we build, when we build it, and how we fund it.You will lead a cross-company team through the Optioneering phase of our investment processto deliver sustainable solutions for our customers, support National Grid's 2050 Net Zero targetand take thesemulti-million-poundschemes in front of the investmentcommittee to sanction.

Our Higher Apprentice Roles are fast paced and varied; this gives you the best chance to develop your skills and gain as much valuable work experience as possible. As a graduate on the engineering and asset management programme, you can expect to be involved in any number of the below activities
  • Support the development of a portfolio of projects across a broad range of engineering disciplines and project types, including overhead lines; cables; substations;switchgear;security infrastructure; and flood defences.
  • Assist in the creation of a sustainable Capital Plan by accurately forecasting the scope, cost andprogrammeof a portfolio of future electricity investments.
  • Supported by some of the most experienced engineers in the industrytodevelop your technical understanding of National Grid's assets.
  • Assist in the re-examination of need cases and build/non-build options.

Engagewith external stakeholders to support Development Consent Orders for major infrastructure developments, such as the construction of new overhead lines.

Monitor investment evolution and delivery against value, need case, and affordability by ensuring any change in circumstance is fully evaluated and assessed.

Fulfil duties of a Construction Design and Management (CDM) client role for Electricity Transmission.

Desired qualifications

You must have, or be predicted to gain, a Grade C-A* or above/4-9 GCSE or equivalent in English Language.

In addition to the GCSE requirements, you must also have one of the following sets of qualifications:
  • 2 A-Levels - 1 must be in either maths or Physics (Grade C/4 or above)
  • BTEC National Certificate Level 3 in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or Engineering (Merit or Distinction with the maths modules being Merit or Distinction)
  • BTEC National Diploma Level 3 in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or Engineering (Merit or Distinction with the maths modules being Merit or Distinction)
  • ONC in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Merit or Distinction with the Maths modules being Merit or Distinction)
  • HNC/HND in Electrical, Electronic or Mechanical Engineering (Pass, Merit or Distinction)
  • Degree in maths, Physics, Chemistry or Engineering
