As a Construction and Civil Engineering company we have project sites, big and small, based all over the UK. From Glasgow to Gosport we want you to experience as much as possible when you join our Apprenticeship programme. There are a whole host of skills and competencies we want you to experience andtherefore need you to be fully flexible on location. As part of our commitment to your training, we will be rotating you every 9-12 months around our projects so that you can maximise your learning experience and exposure to your field of study.

Over the course of your apprenticeship, you will work full-time in a civil engineering role for Murphy Group, where you will be a key member of your assigned project team on site. You will learn how to become responsible for the daily control, management and coordination of construction activities on site to ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget and to the required safety, environmental and quality standards.

Your responsibilities will increase throughout the duration of the apprenticeship programme as your skills and technical knowledge develop, and you will be supported throughout by your assigned workplace mentor, in conjunction with your university apprenticeship tutor, to ensure you gain the right mix of skills and experience to successfully complete your apprenticeship programme.

As a Civil Engineering Degree Apprentice, your key responsibilities will include:
  • Working alongside our project engineers and construction managers to develop construction strategies and sequences
  • Producing sketches and drawings to clarify construction sequences
  • Undertaking concept design and site inspections of temporary works
  • Undertaking scope reviews of civil and structural tenders
  • Assisting in providing design and remedial solutions
  • Reviewing and preparing risk assessments and method statements
  • Establishing and maintaining secondary dimensional control
  • Ensuring appropriate as-built surveys are undertaken
  • Checking dimensions of major elements and critical interfaces
  • Monitoring surveying and setting out of subcontractors, ensuring best practice
  • Raising Non-Conformance Reports
  • Monitoring subcontractors to ensure compliance with method statements and inspection test plans
  • Carrying out quality control checks
  • Assisting package and construction manages with quality issues arising on site

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

We need grafters who'll get stuck into the job. Sometimes things get tough. There are lots of ups and downs in an industry like ours: projects can change; you can run into some pretty big obstacles (like, say, elephant remains on your building site). So we need people who aren't fazed by that: you get your nose down and you work hard, whatever comes your way.

Personal qualities

Go-getters who own their development. We support our apprentices and graduates, and we recognise their successes, but nothing's going to be handed to you on a plate here. If you want a promotion, you've got to work for it, and if you want to learn something, it's up to you to pursue it.

Above all, we need people who believe in our values:
  • Never Harm
  • Always Deliver
  • One Family, One Team, One Murphy
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Integrity - Respect for All

Desired qualifications

A2 level: AAA from three A2 levels to include mathematics and a Physical Science. If grades do not include mathematics, this will be subject to passing a Mathematics Test.

BTEC: DDD in the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma to include Calculus to solve Engineering problems and Further Engineering mathematics OR D*D in the BTEC Level 3 Diploma and grade A in A2 level mathematics. If grades do not include mathematics, this will be subject to passing a mathematics Test.

Candidates with non-standard qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will be subject to passing a mathematics Test.

Due to the nature of the work and size of our sites we require you to have, or be working towards, achieving a full, clean, UK driving licence.

Future prospects

You're the future of the Murphy world: the new starters who'll one day grow to be our experts and our leaders.

Things to consider

Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week). For more information please visit: https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates
