NDT is used across a wide variety of sectors and relies heavily upon Physics and maths. NDT is vital to us in inspecting components across every area of our businesses, and we work with world-class universities and companies to ensure our inspection technologies are industry leading. Your apprenticeship will give you exposure across our business as you learn how to use NDT to find surface and internal defects in a variety of materials.

You'll spend time building your practical and theoretical knowledge of x-rays (radiography), ultrasonics, eddy currents, magnetic particle inspection and fluorescent penetrant inspection, undertaking training courses in these five main NDT methods at a new state-of-the-art training facility. You'll gain manufacturing and laboratory experience of these methods along with quality assessment techniques, providing a mix of both practical and theoretical experience.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

Beyond your academic qualifications, we'll be looking for evidence that you're creative, an agile thinker and genuinely enthusiastic about developing a career in engineering. For example, we'd like to hear about an engineering project you've done at school or work, or a club you've been involved with or in your spare time.

Personal qualities

Our degree apprentices need to be passionate about manufacturing engineering. So, you should be analytical, motivated and, most importantly, endlessly curious about how things are made. Creativity and an agile approach are both important too. You'll also have to be numerate and process-focused.

Desired qualifications

In terms of qualifications, you'll need two A-Levels at grade B/6 or equivalent including maths and either Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Engineering/IT-related Technology or an additional mathematics-related subject (predicted or obtained). Alternatively, a BTEC Level 3 extended diploma in an engineering-related subject, including further maths at DDM minimum. You'll also need GCSE English Language at grade 5/B plus maths and Physics at grade 6/B.

Future prospects

You'll be trained to lead your own technical projects and to work with expert mentors to develop the skills you need to thrive. Your role will see you selecting the optimal NDT method and conducting tests on parts - so be ready for practical experiments, project planning, resource control, problem solving and gaining technical know-how. You'll also learn how we use NDT in research and development, and have the opportunity to learn about state-of-the-art technologies that enable us to find smaller-sized defects, increase our throughput and reduce our costs.
