Off-the-job training via day release over 5 years, studying at the University College of Estate Management (UCEM). This course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and CIOB, CABE and ICES
  • Successful apprentices will become chartered Members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS)

Daily tasks:
  • Taking off quantities from drawings on a PC
  • Providing support to major contractors/estimators/commercial managers/QS
  • Supporting smaller contractors on complete projects, or secondment to larger contractors, for part of off-the-job training to gain RICS accreditation.
  • Studying online or in person via training courses for additional off-the-job training, to support RICS professional development
  • Balance work and studying for the degree and RICS accreditation also, in your own time. One day study release a week for university course studying online


Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Full working knowledge of Microsoft office, excel, word, outlook, PowerPoint
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • Basic knowledge of construction
  • It would be desirable to have used software such as autocad or navisworks

  • Comfortable with meeting new people
  • Good at working in a team/Collaboration
  • Positive and enthusiastic about construction, able to organise themselves
  • Driven, punctual and reliable
  • Passion for quality and accuracy
  • Innovator happy to embrace change and use technology
  • Good document presentation skills, cares about their work
  • Good listener able to follow instructions
  • Able to manage their time between College course, RICS course and Work


Desired qualifications

For standard entry applicants, must have obtained 96 UCAS tariff points (2017 Tariff) or 230 UCAS tariff points (2016 Tariff) or have an equivalent level of attainment through recognised qualifications not included in the UCAS Tariff.

Or,

Have completed an Advanced Apprenticeship in Surveying or an Advanced Apprenticeship in Construction Technical through which a Construction and Built Environment Diploma with a minimum DD profile was obtained or through which a Construction and Built Environment Extended Diploma with a minimum MMM profile was obtained, or an equivalent qualification.

Or,

Have a current RICS Associate qualification (AssocRICS).

And,

Have GCSE Grade C or above in English and Mathematics (Grade 4 for applicants holding newly reformed GCSEs in England) or an equivalent Level 2 qualification in English and Mathematics as defined by the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) in England.

*Recognised qualifications having an equivalent level of attainment as those recognised by UCAS include: Higher National Certificate (HNC), Higher National Diploma (HND), professional qualifications from recognised institutions, certain armed forces qualifications and partially completed degrees.

Things to consider

  • Applicants must have lived inthe UK for at least 3 years at the start of the course
  • Applicants must have a driving licence and access to a vehicle (rural location and visits to construction sites)
  • Applicant will mainly be dealing with office-based computer work
