You will undertake a planned rotation within appropriate departments in order to gain the skills, and competence to complete the Standard requirements. In addition, you will attend education both part time and on block release to achieve the Knowledge, Behaviours and, Competencies as required by the apprenticeship. Attendance outside of standard work patterns should be expected.

You will also undertake internal training not covered by the Standard.

Over a 4.5-year program, our Apprenticeships combine academic college studies with real life work-based experience across our organisation. You will have the opportunity to build and gather evidence of your competence whilst working towards a formal qualification.

Key Duties:
  • Manage your own learning against ILP (Individual Learning Plan) and be accountable for development of your Apprenticeship portfolio as required by the Apprentice Framework
  • Attend University courses full time or day release as requested, Leading to completion of a level 6 Apprenticeship standard
  • Operate at an appropriate level carrying out designated tasks within the team assigned
  • Participate in Company Initiatives, in particular to be engaged in Continuous Improvement activity targeted at all aspects of Alstom performance
  • Conduct oneself at all times in a manner that reflects positively on Alstom
  • To comply with Alstom Code of Ethics

To work with qualified signalling engineering staff and assist them in their responsibilities of:
  • Signalling engineering activities including but not limited to design, project engineering, safety assurance, product development growing capability demonstrated through increased competency recognised in the Authority to work process
  • To be familiar with and capable of working within the Alstom engineering processes e.g. ADDA, V&V, Requirements management, Configuration, RAM etc.
  • To be aware of and assist qualified engineers in monitoring work package budgets
  • Develop a general understanding of railway engineering systems
  • Provide technical support to the teams in the tendering process
  • To develop an understanding of EHS systems and best practice
  • To be able to input information such as close calls etc. into iForm and other Alstom IT tools
  • To understand the basics of regulations that apply to signalling engineering and the railway in general e.g. temporary works, CSM, CDM, electricity at work etc.
  • Ensure work is performed in asafe and effective manner and in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974), Electricity at Work Regulations (1989), Railway Group Standards, and relevant Alstom Procedures
  • To work towards incorporated of chartered status from one of the main engineering institutions plus attain relevant IRSE certification

Desired skills

  • Demonstrating an interest in mechanical/electrical engineering combined with an understanding of the importance of precision and accuracy


Personal qualities

  • The right attitude and adherence towards safety is highly important
  • Ability to interact and work within a multi-disciplined team (with flexibility around team roles), with good interpersonal skills, and be able to work on your own initiative where required


Desired qualifications

To apply, you must have (or be predicted to have):
  • Three A Levels A/B/B at A Level or equivalent including maths, physics, and one other such as ICT, computing or electronics
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 5-9 (C-A*), including maths, English and a science/ICT subject


Future prospects

  • Alstom offer opportunities to extend apprenticeship learning through to Degree and Chartered status if the candidate is suitable and the business need exists
