About the apprenticeship

Duties

An Operations Apprentice involves supporting the team of Transport Planners in key tasks of arranging the transport requirements of our customers by sourcing the right transportation for the job in hand. The Operations Department is a busy, fast-paced environment based around fulfilling customer needs as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Key tasks
• Dealing with transport enquiries - email or telephone
• Recording all key information for every transport booking - including collection address, delivery address, nature of goods to be transported, timescale for transportation, weight, dimensions, collection references & special requirements
• Completion of booking confirmations for all transport loads, both for customer and haulier
• Posting of available transport loads on FLS transport systems to ensure haulier coverage for jobs
• Ensure appropriate haulier & vehicle is selected for each job
• Recording key information on run sheets for each job - Purchase Order number, chosen haulier, comments, vehicle registration numbers
• Update of run sheets according to shipment progress - Yellow (due for collection), Amber (collected), Green (shipment completed)
• Obtaining signed proofs of delivery from hauliers for recording in FLS Client Portal & subsequent invoicing to customers
• Attracting and onboarding new haulage companies
• Adherence to FLS service model for key client deliverables & timescales
• Supporting other team members in meeting their objectives

Additional information

• The role will encompass an NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration
• This will require all tasks to be completed in the allocated timeframe and to a high standard, meeting Training Company deadlines and expectations
• An awareness of the activities of all supporting departments and activities will be included - finance, data & technology, marketing and client solutions as well as operations

• IT literacy - basic IT skills including ability to use Excel, Word, Outlook and internal data systems
• Determination and willingness to see a task through to completion
• Desire to succeed and to progess through Apprenticeship into longer term career with FLS

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply you:

  • will be at least 16 years of age at the time of making your application
  • will not be in full-time education (you can apply while still attending school/college/university but will have finished or intend to finish your studies by the time your apprenticeship starts)
  • will need to meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements to apply.

ALS eligibility

Please note that ALS our training providers have their own eligibility in order to provide the funding required to undertake an apprenticeship. You may not be eligible to apply if:

  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms or a similar subject
  • you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or above in Business Administration, Customer Service or a similar subject

What are the benefits?  

How much will I be paid?

You will earn £19,240 a year while training. When you pass your apprenticeship you can apply for a permanent job at the Welsh Government. Within 2 years of starting your apprenticeship you could be earning £22,500. 

You will get 31 days holidays as well as 10 public and privilege days. We offer flexible working arrangements to help you get the right work/life balance. You will also be eligible for membership of the Civil Service Pension Scheme
