About the environment

HMP Berwyn is a modern, category C closed prison for men with a capacity of 2106. HMP Berwyn also serves the Courts of North and Mid Wales and maintains strong links to the local community with a focus on resettlement. We aim to deliver quality of life services and support people to change their lives for the better.

Providing quality healthcare services to those in Custody means ensuring respect and wellbeing is at the heart of our approach.

Nursing in prison is never dull or predictable. On any given day the skills you use may be similar to those you need working in A&E, alternatively you may be supporting people to manage their mental health or substance misuse.

It is this variety that keeps things fresh and stimulating. Every day will bring new challenges and new experiences. But at the same time, you'll have all the support you need to deliver the best care possible.

The role will be an experience like no other, requiring a diverse and mixed nursing skills and background, and developing the skills you already have. One minute you could be delivering a nurse led clinic and the next you are attending an emergency response.

You can expect to be involved in everything from clinical triage, suturing and wound care, to the evaluation and development of patient care and standards. You'll carry out - and potentially develop - nurse-led clinics, reviewing patient histories, undertaking relevant examinations and tests, organising any necessary treatment and referring patients to other healthcare professionals when you need to.

There are three residential units on site, within each of which up to 750 men reside. There is a health and wellbeing centre, college, gym, library, workshop complex, visits hall, chaplaincy and kitchen.

The Job Requirements
  • You will be a qualified RMN with a real passion for developing your clinical and wider skills in an environment that is ever changing.
  • You'll have a flexible approach working within a team that encourage new ideas and opinions on how to improve the service.
  • Be able to work autonomously
  • Show initiative when it comes to handling a wide range of situations

What we Offer
  • Excellent progression through various career pathway opportunities such as but not limited to a **preceptorship programme**
  • Support and guidance with Revalidation

We are also proud to support our employees with continued professional development opportunities and further education subject to service needs.
  • We welcome flexible working and will consider part-time applicants.

Role Responsibility
  • Assist in the promotion, monitoring and development of evidence based health care services, and monitor the work of others providing services to the population.
  • Attend meetings associated with your area of responsibility
  • Demonstrate a willingness to develop professionally and contribute to the delivery of the NSFs to the practice population.
  • Promote and support multidisciplinary and interagency working throughout the delivery of healthcare, understanding the contribution of others in the wider prison system.

  • Administer medications as prescribed according to NMC guidelines.
  • Support the development, implementation, and monitoring of Clinical Governance and quality assurance.
  • Support the continuous personal development and training of all healthcare staff.
