The main function of the job will be to produce and execute test plans and test cases/scripts from functional specifications or user stories. You will also need to accurately record and monitor any defects raised - assessing and recognising risk and impact. Your role will involve monitoring the accuracy from the functional to the delivered product and conducting a range of different software test types within the broad categories of functional, non-functional, white box/structural and change-related testing whilst interpreting and executing test scripts using organisationally agreed methods and standards.

You will be working in a team of highly skilled professionals who will support you in developing yourself and skills.

Reporting to our Testing Team Leader, your specific responsibilities will include:

Project and change delivery

In addition to the responsibilities listed above, the job holder may be required to perform other duties as assigned by the line manager from time to time. The job holder has a duty to take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and of other persons with whom they come into contact at work. The job holder also has a duty to co-operate with the University in complying with any statutory duty or requirement concerning health and safety at work.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Basic SQL
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent numeracy

Desirable but not essential
  • At least 1 years experience of working in a software-related role
  • Experience in working closely with an IT department and external suppliers
  • Testing website and software applications
  • At least 1 year in a role involving customer service


Personal qualities

• Proficient Microsoft applications user
• Knowledge of different web browsers
• Ability to complete routine tasks in a careful manner despite distractions
• Ability to prioritise, estimate, organise and schedule work
• Ability to work co-operatively with others to achieve a common goal
• Ability to record and interpret test progress and results, communicating test status to the relevant stakeholders.

Desired qualifications

  • At least five GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade C or above including maths, English and either IT or Science
  • Educated to Level 3 as a minimum in an IT based subject
  • Educated to Level 3 as a minimum ( For Data Analyst / Business Analyst)

Future prospects

The role will be an FTC for the duration of the Apprenticeship and likely to go Permanent on successful completion of the programme and at this stage there will be a salary increase.
